Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at an acute care, Level 4 Trauma facility requiring strong IV skills and the ability to float to like units.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting with a 24-bed inpatient unit that also accommodates up to 10 observation and day surgery patients
- Common diagnoses include pneumonia, cellulitis, UTI, COPD, GU conditions, pacemaker management, sepsis, nursing home placements, and day surgical cases including orthopedic (hips and knees), cholecystectomies, appendectomies, and TURP-CBI procedures
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 5:1 on day shift and 6:1 at 11 PM; team nursing with LPNs follows a 2:7 ratio
- Telemetry monitoring is reviewed in the ICU daily; basic arrhythmia knowledge required with a physical monitor at the nurses' station
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
- Charge nurses carry an assignment; travelers may be placed as relief charge nurse
- Nurse aides are present on the unit
- Hospitalist available in-house until 6 PM daily, with telemed coverage overnight; RT available 24/7
- 12-hour night shifts (7 PM – 7 AM)
- Weekend rotation required every other weekend, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- On-call/standby opportunities may be required
- Floating to like units and patients is required
- EMR is Cerner, with a transition to Epic underway
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active MI RN license required by start date
- BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg or Med/Surg Telemetry experience in an acute care setting
- Critical Access or Trauma Level 3 or 4 experience preferred
- Experience with TURP-CBI procedures preferred
- Must be proficient and comfortable with IV starts, as no IV team is on-site
- Basic telemetry arrhythmia interpretation skills required
- 2 professional references required: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years of relevant experience
Additional Information
- Level 4 Trauma facility with limited on-site resources — RT oversees the entire hospital and there is no dedicated IV team
- A small pediatric population (approximately 3 cases per year) is present on the unit; travelers will not be assigned pediatric patients unless they have prior pediatric experience or no other staffing options are available
- Orientation consists of an 8-hour computer education day followed by 4 hours of shadowing, a full 12-hour orientation shift, and then independent practice on day 3
- Schedule attempts to accommodate self-scheduling with longer shift blocks where possible, though blocking cannot be guaranteed
- Holiday coverage is required for 2 out of 3 assigned holidays
- Professional, solid-color scrubs required; no specific color mandated
- Candidates who have previously worked for this health system as permanent staff must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their start date, and hospital approval is required
- Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which may affect the travel pay rate offered
