Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/HVU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 1 year of PCU-specific experience and proficiency with cardiac procedural recovery and titratable drips on 12-hour night shifts.
Details
- 44-bed mixed acuity unit (Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med/Surg) within a hospital setting
- Patient population includes direct admits, ED admits, and post-cath lab patients with diagnoses such as MI, NSTEMI/STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmias, pacemaker malfunction, and epicardial pacers
- Unit also serves as backup Stroke unit and Medical Overflow
- Step-down level care provided for post cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post-TAVR, post-EP studies, and post-pacemaker insertion patients
- RN-to-patient ratio is 1:4, with the possibility of 1:3 based on acuity
- 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend rotation required
- No on-call responsibilities
- Every other holiday coverage required
- Floating primarily to the sister General PCU unit; may also float to MS/Tele or ICU to care for PCU-level patients within scope of practice
- EMR: Epic; Alaris infusion pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing system in use
- Tele techs oversee cardiac monitoring; RN confirms strips at 6am and 6pm
Requirements
- Active RN license — SD license or a Compact RN license currently in hand is required
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience, with at least 1 year specific to PCU
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG, TAVR, post-cardiac cath) required
- Proficiency with MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine) and Heparin drips required
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation and chest tube management required
- TNK administration experience preferred
- Epic EMR experience preferred; candidates without Epic experience may require manager approval
- Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- Unit support includes CNAs (ratio 1:5–8 depending on shift), an unassigned charge nurse, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, respiratory therapy available 24/7, and a hospitalist in-facility 24/7
- Tele techs manage cardiac monitoring oversight; RNs confirm rhythm strips at shift change
- Orientation consists of 2 partial days of education followed by 3 supervised 12-hour shifts on the unit
- Travelers may be expected to precept nursing students
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Free parking available on-site
- RTO of up to 7 days is allowed; a full week off requires contract extension — no time off permitted during the first 3 weeks of August (Sturgis Bike Rally period)
- First-time travelers are considered with 2 or more years of total nursing experience
- Candidates must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
- Former permanent staff must wait a full year before returning in a travel capacity
