Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level 4 trauma acute care facility in Michigan, requiring at least 1 year of MS/MS-Tele experience and comfort with limited onsite resources.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting with a 24-bed inpatient unit that also accommodates up to 10 observation and day surgery patients
- Common diagnoses include NHP, cellulitis, UTI, COPD, GU issues, pacemaker, sepsis, nursing home placements, and day surgical cases including ortho (hips and knees), cholecystectomies, appendectomies, and TURP-CBI procedures
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 5:1 on day shift and 6:1 at 11pm; team nursing with LPNs follows a 2:7 ratio
- Telemetry strip reading is required; basic arrhythmia knowledge expected with a physical monitor at the nurses' station (ICU monitors daily)
- No IV team onsite — must be comfortable and proficient with IV starts independently
- RT is available 24/7 and oversees the entire hospital; CPAP is used on the unit
- Hospitalist available in-house until 6pm daily, with telemedicine coverage after hours
- Charge nurses carry an assignment; travelers may be placed as relief charge nurse
- Nurse aides are available on the unit
- 12-hour night shifts (7pm–7am)
- Weekend rotation required every other weekend, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- On-call or standby assignments are possible
- Floating to like units and similar patient populations is required
- Charting system is Cerner, currently transitioning to Epic
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active MI RN license required by start date
- BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg or Med/Surg Telemetry experience in an acute care setting
- Experience with TURP-CBI procedures is preferred
- Critical Access or Trauma Level 3 or 4 experience preferred
- Basic telemetry arrhythmia interpretation skills required
- Proficiency with IV starts required
- 2 professional references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years in the same specialty
Additional Information
- Small pediatric population exists on the unit but travelers are generally not assigned to pediatric patients unless they have prior pediatric experience or no other option is available
- Orientation consists of an 8-hour computer education day with 4 hours of shadowing, followed by a 12-hour orientation shift, with independent practice beginning on day 3
- Self-scheduling is accommodated when possible, though block scheduling cannot be guaranteed; longer blocks of ~6 shifts are offered when available
- Holiday coverage is required for 2 out of every 3 holidays
- No specific scrub color required — solid, professional attire is expected
- Candidates who have previously worked for this health system as permanent staff must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date, and hospital approval is required
- Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which may affect pay rate eligibility
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
