Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position on an Infusion/Oncology unit at a Level II Trauma facility, requiring acute care experience and comfort with complex patients including drip titration.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting on an 8N Med Surg/Tele Infusion/Oncology unit at a Level II Trauma facility
- 27-bed unit serving oncology/hematology, general medical, GI bleed, PE/DVT, sepsis, CHF/COPD, pneumonia, and other complex medical patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:4-5 on day/eve shifts; 1:6 on nights (1:7 possible but uncommon when short-staffed)
- Nurse aides available at ratios of 1:7-9 on day/eve and up to 1:14 overnight
- 12-hour day/evening shifts starting at 7:00 AM or 11:00 AM; night shifts run 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
- Every other weekend required (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
- Holiday coverage required: 2 out of 3 winter holidays; every other holiday at other times
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Travelers are first to float within med-surg units; float outside med-surg only for observer or tasking needs, done in 4-hour increments
- Charting system is Cerner (transitioning to Epic)
- Centralized telemetry techs monitor and read strips; RNs are expected to be tele-aware but are not required to independently read strips
- RT available in-house 24/7, overseeing multiple units; equipment includes continuous CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow O2
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WI or Compact RN license required by start date
- BLS certification (AHA) required and must be active
- Minimum 1 year of acute care experience required
- Must be experienced and comfortable managing complex patients
- Experience with drips required, including titration of insulin, heparin, Cardizem, nitro, amiodarone, and octreotide
- Must be comfortable managing blood transfusions
- Travel pairs will not be accepted; candidates must be applying independently
- 2 professional references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years of relevant experience
Additional Information
- No oncology or chemotherapy knowledge required; internal nurses handle chemotherapy treatment needs
- Prior travel nursing experience preferred
- Travelers may be asked to step into a charge nurse role if comfortable, particularly on night shift; charge nurses carry a modified patient assignment
- Orientation consists of 1 day of computer/CBT/regulatory training plus one 12-hour floor shift
- Candidates who have previously worked for this health system must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date; hospital approval is also required
- Schedule requests are accommodated when possible, but block scheduling cannot be guaranteed
- Any color scrubs are acceptable; scrubs with logos from other health systems are not permitted
- Local candidates (those residing within 80 miles of the facility) are eligible and accepted for this position
