Description
American Traveler is seeking a licensed RN for a Staff Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and Cerner or Epic proficiency.

- Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a Level III NICU
- Possible unit assignments include: 6 North Trauma Surgical (23 beds), 5 South Neuroscience (33 beds), 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (39 beds), 4 South Clinical Decision Unit (18 beds), 3 South Orthopedics (20 beds), and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology (23 beds)
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, palliative care, ETOH withdrawal, COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, orthopedic/spine, urology, ENT, and more
- Patient ratios are generally 1:5–6 depending on unit assignment
- Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- EMR: Cerner (preferred)
- IV pumps: Plum 360; Medication dispensing: Omnicell; Monitors: Spacelabs
- 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- Floating required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER holds)
- Scheduling is managed on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; no self-scheduling
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
- Cerner EMR experience required if candidate has strictly ICU background; Epic or Cerner experience accepted for Med/Surg background
- Skills vary by unit but may include: wound care, chest tubes, trach care, NGT, PEG tubes, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, ostomy/colostomy care, PCA pumps, wound vacs, CVL dressing changes, foley care, restraints, and medication administration
- At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for 6 North Trauma Surgical consideration
- Chemo certification preferred for 5 North Med/Surg Oncology assignment
- Telemetry experience is a plus — candidates with tele experience should detail their background
- One reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
- DOB (day and month) required for consideration
- Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided they meet the minimum experience requirements
- Nurses will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
- New travelers to the facility receive 24 hours of classroom orientation plus 24 hours of on-unit orientation; orientation for returning travelers who have been absent 1+ years follows the same structure
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio for vitals, ADLs, glucose checks), charge nurses, hospitalists, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, and an IV/VAT team
- Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific holiday scheduling is not contractually guaranteed before arrival
- RTO blackout dates apply to several holidays and holiday weekends throughout the year; requests during blackout periods require NM/Eanh approval
- Up to 7 days of pre-approved time off may be arranged, excluding blackout dates
- Previous permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible as a traveler
- Interviews are conducted via SimpliFi; candidates should be prepared for a live interview
- Scrubs: any color
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
