Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Surgical PCU position at a major academic teaching hospital, requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience and proficiency in high-acuity post-surgical care on night shift.
Details
- Work setting is an academic teaching hospital Surgical PCU with near-ICU level acuity
- Patient population includes post-surgical ENT (neck dissections, mandibulectomy), thoracic (esophagectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy), general surgery (pancreatic, bowel/liver resections), urology (urinary diversions, cystectomies, RPLND), and medical overflow patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3–4
- Proficiency required in cardiac monitoring, chest tube management, fresh trach care, feeding tube care, epidurals, non-titratable cardiac drips, IV insulin protocols and insulin drip titration, external BiPAP/CPAP, total laryngectomy care, and Doppler flap checks
- Charting is performed in Cerner (experience required)
- Schedule is nights, 4x12-hour shifts (19:00–07:30)
- Travelers are expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs
- Floating is required to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) within the hospital and to an affiliate hospital nearby; refusal to float may result in contract termination
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be assigned as needed, with training and resources provided
Requirements
- Active IN or Compact RN license currently in hand
- Nursing degree from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited program required
- Current AHA or RQI certifications: BLS and ACLS
- Minimum 2 years of PCU or comparable acute care RN experience
- Proficiency in high-acuity post-surgical nursing skills as listed in job details
- Cerner EMR experience required
- 2 supervisor references required for consideration
- SSN and DOB required for consideration
Additional Information
- This is an academic teaching facility; all travel nurses must be willing to precept students and/or have students shadow them during their assignment
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates (Indiana residents) are not accepted for this position
- Former permanent or PRN employees of IU Health must have been separated for at least 12 months before applying as a traveler
- Travelers who have accrued 12 months of travel employment within IU Health are required to take a consecutive break to reset eligibility: out-of-state residents require a 90-day break and in-state residents require a 180-day break
- Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Up to 5 days of RTO may be auto-approved
- Indiana-licensed RNs are not eligible for this position (PCU); exemptions apply only to Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers
