Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a NICU position at a Level III NICU/Level IV Perinatal Center teaching hospital in Illinois, requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience and an active IL RN license.
Details
- 13-week travel contract at a 444-bed academic teaching hospital with a Level III NICU and Level IV Perinatal Center
- Primary unit is the Nursing Float Pool, with assignments covering NICU, PICU, PCICU, General Pediatrics, and ER across two campuses (Oak Lawn and Park Ridge)
- NICU accommodates 61 beds with patient types including premature, neuro, GI, and feeder/grower neonates; PICU handles 24 beds with intubated, post-surgical, respiratory failure, and neuro patients; PCICU covers 16 beds with complex cardiac cases including Norwood, truncus, TAPVR, HLHS, and valve replacement patients (no transplants)
- General Pediatrics serves patients neonate–18 years with hematology, oncology, and post-surgical cases; ER covers 22 beds for patients neonate–18 years
- Patient ratios: NICU 1:2, PICU 1:2, PCICU 1:2, Gen Peds 1:3–4, ER 1:3–4
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM–7:30 AM, 3 days per week (36 hours/week)
- Scheduling runs on a 6-week cycle with every-other-weekend rotation
- Float assignments are bi-campus and may include PICU, PCICU, NICU, and General Pediatrics at both Oak Lawn and Park Ridge locations
- Assignments are posted 90–120 minutes prior to shift start
- EMR: Epic (experience required)
- IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Pyxis; monitors: Med Sonic
Requirements
- Active Illinois RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, PALS, and NRP
- Minimum 2 years of NICU or relevant pediatric nursing experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Epic EMR experience required
- Proficiency with trach management, mechanical ventilators, chest tubes, Foley catheters, surgical drains, arterial lines, CVLs, blood draws, IV starts, traction, CPAP, high-flow oxygen, oscillators, central lines, dressing changes, heliox, and nitric respiratory support
- Experience managing drips including Fentanyl, Propofol, Precedex, Epinephrine, and Levophoedrine
- Ability to travel between two campuses (Oak Lawn and Park Ridge) as required
- One professional reference from within the past year required, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
- Candidate DOB and last 4 digits of SSN required for consideration

- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Former employees of Advocate Health or any of its subsidiaries must be separated for at least 12 months before being eligible for a travel assignment
- Local candidates are accepted at the same rate with no radius restrictions
- Departmental orientation includes NEO training plus 2 days of departmental orientation in PICU/PCICU
- Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays; all RTO requests must go through the manager
- Support staff includes CNAs, a receptionist/HUC, a charge nurse per department, an IV/VAT team, phlebotomy, resource nurses (based on staffing/acuity), and 24/7 RT, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage
- Required scrub color: Navy
