Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced ICU RN for a 13-week night shift contract requiring strong critical care skills including EKG interpretation, vent management, and experience with complex cardiac and surgical patient populations.

Details

  • Acute care hospital ICU setting within a Critical Care service line encompassing a 12-bed CVICU, 8-bed COVID ICU, 8-bed MS ICU, and a 16-bed PCU (up to 20 with double occupancy)
  • Patient population includes COVID requiring manual proning, low-level neuro, EVD, DKA, sepsis, ARF, CRRT, rhabdomyolysis, post-MI, detox, chest tubes, art lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, Impella, TAVR, cardiac surgical, VAD devices, STEMI, PCI, CEA, and IABP
  • Travelers with open heart surgery experience may be assigned fresh post-op open heart patients
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:1–2 in the ICU based on acuity and staffing; 1:3–4 in PCU
  • RNs are required to titrate critical care drips including pressors (levophed), paralytics, sedation (propofol), anti-arrhythmics, dopamine, heparin, and argatroban
  • RNs must read and interpret their own telemetry strips; monitors are Nihon Kohden located in rooms and at the nurses' station; no monitor techs on unit
  • Respiratory therapy equipment includes ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, Vapotherm, and Glidescopes used during intubation
  • Intensivists are in-house 24/7 with NP supplementation; RT covers all areas but is not dedicated to the ICU 24/7; no nurse aides on the unit
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a), 13-week contract
  • Every other weekend required; weekend nights include Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday depending on rotation
  • First to float; may float to PCU, MST, and East Campus ICU/PCU per staff rotation
  • Low-census call possible approximately once every 6 weeks; no scheduled on-call requirement
  • Schedules are made 4 weeks in advance with some self-scheduling, subject to manager review and balancing

Requirements

  • Active AZ RN license or Compact (NLC) RN license currently in hand; pending licenses not accepted
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required
  • Strong EKG/dysrhythmia interpretation skills required
  • Experience with ventilator weaning and troubleshooting required
  • ABG interpretation skills required
  • Experience with IABP and Prismaflex CRRT preferred
  • Skills in EVD management, chest tubes, art lines, and Swan-Ganz catheters highly desired
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility (permanent address as shown on driver's license)
  • Cannot have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity-affiliated facility within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Copy of driver's license required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam with a score of 80% or higher within two attempts prior to contract confirmation
  • A pass/fail sterile technique test for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes is administered on the first day of orientation
  • Failing either the Relias Dysrhythmia exam (after two attempts) or the sterile technique test results in a 6-month DNU status for CommonSpirit facilities in Arizona and the Sacramento, CA region
  • Orientation consists of 8 hours of general hospital orientation, one 12-hour precepted shift on the unit, and a second 12-hour shift with a designated buddy; additional orientation may be provided for specialized skills such as open heart or CRRT
  • Holiday coverage is required; travelers are expected to work one winter holiday and the eve of another
  • Scrub color is open (any professional color, no camouflage); unit is transitioning to navy scrubs in October
  • RTO of less than 7 days and no holiday requests are required for auto-offer consideration
  • First-time travelers are not explicitly noted as welcome; significant ICU experience across multiple specialties is expected given rotation across all critical care areas
