Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med Surg/Progressive Care (Stepdown) Unit position requiring telemetry experience and NIHSS certification for a 13-week night shift assignment.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting in a Med Surg/Progressive Care stepdown unit
- 18-bed telemetry unit with 6 PCU-capable beds, all private rooms
- Unit is capable of housing COVID patients using a mixed unit setup with temporary walls and an air handling system
- Common diagnoses include AMI, stroke/TIA, pneumonia, renal/dialysis, AFib with RVR, SIRS, and diabetes mellitus
- RN-to-patient ratio is 1:4 on telemetry and 1:3 on PCU/stepdown
- Philips telemetry monitors used with a dedicated monitor tech room; RNs are expected to validate monitor tech interpretations and document every 4 hours or more frequently as needed
- Common drips include Cardizem, amiodarone, Bumex, Lasix, Eptifibatide (Integrilin), octreotide, and pantoprazole (Protonix)
- High-flow O2 used for COVID stepdown patients; home CPAP supported; no ventilators
- Charting via Allscripts EMR
- 12-hour night shifts, 3x12s per week
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (nights = Friday and Saturday)
- May float to other Med Surg units
Requirements
- Active AZ RN license or compact RN license required
- Current AHA certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience required; 2 years preferred
- Experience in a Med Surg acute care setting required
- BSN not required
Additional Information
- Support staff on unit includes telemetry techs, a charge nurse (available 24/7, taking 0–2 patients as needed), HUCs, and PCTs
- CNAs split the floor, each covering up to 9 patients
- Nurse managers conduct rounds but do not provide direct patient care
- Hospitalist, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy services available in-house 24/7
- No IV team on unit — nurses are expected to manage IV needs independently
- Orientation is 2–3 days with a preceptor (approximately 8 orientation hours)
- 13-week contract
