Description

American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Mixed Acuity ICU/PCU position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring a minimum of 1 year of ICU experience and proficiency with titratable drips and hemodynamic monitoring.

Details

  • Work in a mixed acuity unit (4 South PCU) within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
  • Unit serves intermediate care patients as well as non-vented ICU-level patients across 18 beds
  • Patient population includes neurological and post-procedural patients (post-TNK, neuro IR procedures, hemorrhages/aneurysms, burr holes, post-VP shunt placements, post-craniotomy/craniectomy, lumbar drains, spinal cord injuries, non-vented neuro patients including EVDs, continuous EEG, neuro/spine surgery) as well as respiratory failure, CHF, hypotension, sepsis, AMS, acute neurological diagnoses, DKA, and electrolyte abnormalities
  • RN-to-patient ratio is 1:3 based on acuity; CNA ratio is 1:12
  • Skills required include managing patients on BiPAP/CPAP, cardiac rhythm interpretation, CVP monitoring, hemodynamic line monitoring, post-surgical drains, trachs, and chest tubes
  • Experience with titratable drips required, including Cardizem, Dobutamine, Dopamine, Esmolol, Insulin, Cardene, Nitro, Levophed, and Epinephrine
  • RNs are required to read and measure telemetry strips independently
  • EMR: Cerner; IV pump: Plum 360; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Spacelabs & Resparray; unit-specific equipment includes bedside monitors and bladder scanner
  • 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation required every other weekend; back-to-back weekends possible but rare
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Floating may be required to like units (MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER/holds; ICU-to-ICU, ICU-to-MS task limited to 3, or ICU-to-ER/holds)
  • Schedule runs on a 6-week cycle

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 1 year of ICU experience required
  • First-time travelers considered with a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience
  • Proficiency with titratable vasoactive and cardiac drips required
  • Experience with BiPAP/CPAP management, hemodynamic monitoring, CVP monitoring, post-surgical drains, trachs, and chest tubes required
  • Cerner EMR experience preferred
  • One reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months required for consideration
  • Date of birth (day and month) required for consideration
  • Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Former permanent staff must wait 6 months before being considered as a traveler

  • The unit is in a formative cultural stage with a shared focus on learning, process improvement, accountability, and staff collaboration
  • Department support includes CNAs, a receptionist/HUC, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, rapid response team, a dedicated educator and nurse mentor, RT 24/7, hospitalist 24/7, and intensivist 24/7
  • New travelers to the facility or return travelers absent for 1+ years will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours of on-unit orientation; orientation for rehires is determined based on last date of service
  • Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific dates are not contractually guaranteed off prior to arrival
  • Up to 7 days of time off may be approved, excluding blackout dates (blackout date exceptions require NM/Eanh approval)
  • Scrubs: any color accepted
  • Free parking available on campus and in a parking deck

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my first travel assignment. American Traveler has made the entire process feel easy from start to finish.
