Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for an Emergency Department position at a Level 2 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center in Wisconsin, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ER experience and a full weekend commitment every other weekend.

Details

  • 38-bed combined Emergency and Urgent Care unit with 5 trauma bays/resuscitation rooms
  • Adult and Pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center; STEMI receiving and Stroke Center
  • Common diagnoses include chest pain, abdominal pain, sepsis, syncope, elevated heart rate, headache, and suicidal ideation
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3 in the ER and 1:6 in Urgent Care
  • Common drips include heparin, nitroglycerin, diltiazem, amiodarone, nicardipine, and norepinephrine
  • Unit sees approximately 140–180 patients per day
  • 12-hour variable evening and night shifts, with occasional day shifts as needed
  • Every other weekend required (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
  • Every other holiday required
  • No dedicated fast track; facility has an Urgent Care instead
  • Travelers are expected to perform triage for both walk-in and ambulance patients
  • ER holds are intermixed within the department; no separate holding area
  • 4 dedicated psych rooms within the department; no separate psych/seclusion area
  • GE monitors used throughout the department; RNs are responsible for monitoring patient rhythms
  • Both X-ray and CT are available within the department
  • RNs draw labs; phlebotomy draws blood cultures unless unavailable within 20 minutes
  • Charting system is Cerner (transitioning to Epic); Cerner experience preferred but not required
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active WI or Compact RN license required by start date
  • Required certifications: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), NIHSS, PALS (AHA), and TNCC; all must be active at time of consideration
  • Minimum 2 years of ER experience required
  • Level 1 or 2 trauma center experience required
  • Pediatric experience required
  • 2 professional references required: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years of relevant experience

Additional Information

  • 3-day unit-specific orientation: Day 1 consists of computer-based training and department orientation; Days 2 and 3 are on-unit orientation with an RN preceptor
  • Scheduling is managed by an RN scheduler; no self-scheduling and block scheduling is not typically available
  • Floating may occur occasionally, limited to patient sitter or support roles only — travelers will not be required to take a patient assignment on another unit
  • No formal on-call requirement; occasional standby may be requested if census is low prior to shift start
  • Support staff includes a 24/7 HUC, techs (scheduled 0700–0300) capable of IVs, labs, EKGs, and ADL assistance, and on-staff paramedics who can administer medications and assist with procedures
  • Charge nurse coverage available on all shifts; House Supervisor on 24/7
  • RT is available in-house 24/7 for ABGs, breathing treatments, and intubation support; RT equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen
  • Security is available in-house 24/7, though not stationed in the ER
  • ENPC certification is encouraged but not required
  • Scrubs must be any solid color, clean and professional
  • Candidates who have previously worked for this health system must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date; hospital approval is required
  • Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which affects the travel pay rate

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my first travel assignment. American Traveler has made the entire process feel easy from start to finish. Amanda has been awesome throughout my assignment. She checks in regularly with a call or text just to see how things are going and make sure I don’t need anything.
