Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced Emergency Department RN for a 13-week travel contract at a Level 2 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, requiring active WI or compact RN licensure and a minimum of 2 years of ER experience.

Details

  • 38-bed combined Emergency and Urgent Care unit at an Adult and Pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center, STEMI receiving and Stroke Center
  • Unit features 5 trauma bays/resuscitation rooms and 4 dedicated psych rooms; ER holds are intermixed within the department
  • Common diagnoses include chest pain, abdominal pain, sepsis, syncope, elevated heart rate, headache, and suicidal ideation
  • Patient volume averages 140–180 patients per day (24 hours)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: ER 1:3, UC 1:6
  • Common drips include heparin, nitroglycerin, diltiazem, amiodarone, nicardipine, and norepinephrine
  • Charting system is Cerner (transitioning to Epic); Cerner experience preferred
  • All shifts are 12 hours; possible start times include 05:00, 07:00, 08:00, 09:00, 11:00, 12:00, 15:00, 17:00, and 19:00 — shifts are variable but skew toward evenings and nights
  • Every other weekend required; every other holiday required
  • No formal on-call requirement; occasional standby possible if census is low prior to shift start
  • Floating is limited to patient sitter or 'helping hands' roles only — travelers will not be assigned a patient team on other units

Requirements

  • Active WI or compact RN license required by start date
  • Required certifications: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), NIHSS, PALS (AHA), and TNCC; all must be active
  • Minimum 2 years of emergency department experience required
  • Level 1 or Level 2 trauma center experience required
  • Pediatric ER experience required
  • Two professional references required: one from a supervisor within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and one from a peer or supervisor within the last 3 years in the same specialty

Additional Information

  • All nurses are expected to triage both walk-in patients and ambulance arrivals; travelers are expected to participate in triage
  • Support staff includes HUCs (24/7), patient care techs (capable of IVs, labs, blood cultures, and EKGs), and on-staff paramedics who can administer medications, assist with procedures, and discharge patients
  • Respiratory therapy is available in-house 24/7 and assists with ABGs, breathing treatments, intubations, and critically ill patients with respiratory concerns; RNs are expected to troubleshoot RT equipment but should call RT for issues
  • GE monitors are used throughout the department; RNs are responsible for monitoring their patients' rhythms — there are no dedicated monitor techs
  • Both X-ray and CT are available within the department; a transport team operates 06:00–21:00
  • RNs draw labs; phlebotomy draws blood cultures unless unable to arrive within 20 minutes
  • Physician team includes ED physicians, mid-levels (PAs and NPs), and UC physicians; charge nurses and a house supervisor are available 24/7
  • Orientation consists of 3 days: Day 1 is computer-based training and department orientation; Days 2 and 3 are on-unit orientation with an RN preceptor
  • Scheduling is managed by a dedicated RN scheduler — no self-scheduling; block scheduling is not typically available
  • Scrubs must be any solid color, clean and professional
  • ENPC certification is encouraged but not required
  • Former permanent staff must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date, and hospital approval is required
  • Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which may affect the travel pay rate
