Description
American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg Tele RN for a mixed acuity oncology unit, requiring 2 years of inpatient nursing experience and an active OH or compact RN license.
Details
- Mixed acuity PCU/MS Tele unit caring for medical oncology patients with approximately 24 PCU beds and 24 MS Tele beds
- High acuity patient population with a variety of diagnoses ranging from solid tumors to some blood cancers
- Rare pediatric patients may be present on the unit but are typically cared for by permanent staff
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and fall prevention
- Uses B450 GE telemetry monitors, bladder scanners, Alaris pumps, PCA pumps, and continuous bladder irrigation equipment
- Epic charting system experience required
- 12-hour Day (7:00-19:30) or Night (19:00-7:30) shifts, 3x per week, with possible rotation between days and nights based on department needs
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4-week scheduling period based on staffing priorities
- Staffing ratios target 1:4-5 but may vary based on unit needs
- Weekend shifts are variable
- Required to float to units of equivalent or lower acuity level
Requirements
- Active OH or compact RN license required in hand at time of consideration
- BLS certification required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 2 years of current inpatient nursing experience required in the specialty applying for, with consistent work in the last 12 months
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Chemotherapy competence not required; training available through a 2-day chemo course for interested candidates
- Epic EMR experience required
- Teaching hospital experience preferred
- Education must be from an ACEN or CCNE accredited program
- 2 professional references required, with at least 1 from a Manager/Director or formal leadership role and the second acceptable from a Charge RN; no coworker references accepted
Additional Information
- Care for medical oncology patients with a variety of solid tumor and blood cancer diagnoses in a high acuity setting
- Skills utilized may include IV therapy, port access/management, central and peripheral line care, PICC line management, blood product administration, cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia management, and use of Rapid Response/Code teams
- Additional skills may include BiPAP/CPAP management, chest tube care, tracheostomy care, continuous bladder irrigation, heparin protocols, IV insulin protocols, and surgical drain management
- Opportunity for professional growth including chemotherapy administration training for interested candidates
- Willingness to learn and grow nursing practice is encouraged; previous travel experience preferred but not required, making this role open to first-time travelers
- Candidates must complete Ohio fingerprinting promptly after signing contract; those outside Ohio but within driving distance must travel to a fingerprinting location, while those at greater distances will receive a mailed fingerprinting packet
- Former employees are eligible for a travel assignment once they have been away from the facility for 6 months or more
- Current employees of any Ohio State University hospital location are ineligible to be hired as a traveler
- RTO must be requested and built into the contract at time of consideration, limited to 7 days or less
- Local candidates are accepted at the same rate

Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
