Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit position in Bangor, ME, requiring at least 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience and a ME or compact RN license.

Details

• Freestanding acute inpatient psychiatric facility with a contracted ER located 5 minutes away
• Pediatric psychiatric unit serving patients ages 5–18, with floating required to the adult unit (ages 18+/geriatric)
• Pediatric diagnoses include Eating Disorders, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria
• Adult diagnoses include Schizophrenia, MDD, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, and occasionally Substance Use Disorder or detoxing patients on CIWA (medically cleared)
• All patients are medically cleared upon admission; lines, drains, and tubes are not typical
• Both voluntary and involuntary admissions; no forensic patients or inmates
• Night shift: 7P–7A, 36 hours per week
• Night ratio is 1:13 with resource and nursing support; day ratio is 1:5–6
• Psych Tech support: Peds unit has 6 Techs on days and 2 on nights; Adult unit has 2 Techs on both days and nights
• Charting via Cerner; Pyxis medication dispensing
• Floating required between adult and pediatric units as needed
• Every other weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday)
• No on-call requirements
• Holiday coverage required on a rotation basis
• Modified self-scheduling: travelers sign up for preferred shifts, which are reviewed and adjusted by the manager/scheduler to ensure coverage
• Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved; contract may need to be extended if shifts cannot be covered within a week

Requirements

• Active ME state license or compact RN license currently in hand
• Current BLS certification required
• Minimum 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience required
• Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred; candidates without peds experience may be considered with manager approval
• De-escalation experience and experience with physical restraints (chemical restraints are not used)
• Experience with medication administration and clinical documentation
• Permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility to be eligible
• Must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
• 2 professional references within the past year required, at least one from a Supervisor, Manager, or Director (Charge RN acceptable; peer references are not accepted)
• Full SSN, Driver's License, and copies of all certifications required for consideration
• Flu vaccination required for eligibility to start

Additional Information

• MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) certification is obtained on-site during orientation
• Orientation consists of the first week on day shift (Mon–Fri), followed by a second week on the contracted night shift schedule
• Scenario-based de-escalation training is held every other week; a MOAB Educator/Trainer is on site
• During patient escalations, a 'code leader' verbally de-escalates while assigning roles to other staff; travelers may be asked to serve as code leader, and a debriefing form should be completed after each incident
• Facility uses seclusion rooms when necessary; security is on site but does not respond to patient escalations — all unit staff (Techs and Nurses across 6 units) respond
• Specialized therapies offered include pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens
• Support staff includes a Nurse Supervisor (evenings/weekends), Nurse Manager (days), House Administrator (overnight/weekends), Charge Nurse, contracted Phlebotomist, NP (on site until 1600, on call overnight), Psychiatrist (daily rounds, on call 0000–0600), Occupational Therapist (0800–1630, 7 days/week), and Psych Techs
