Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Orthopedics position at a Level III trauma facility, requiring an active IA or Compact RN license and at least 1 year of experience.
Details
- Acute care Med/Surg Orthopedics unit with 28 beds plus 22 overflow
- Patient population includes total knees, total hips, shoulder replacements, COPD, diabetes, wounds, IV infusions, dementia, oncology, hip and ankle fractures, sepsis, pneumonia, cholelithiasis, CHF, ETOH/drug abuse, and more
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5; patient care techs available at a 1:10 ratio
- Common drips include heparin, IV antibiotics, antithrombotics, and narcotics; RNs are not required to titrate drips
- Charge nurse present on each shift; charge nurse does take a patient assignment
- Monitor techs are stationed in the ICU; unit monitors are available at the main nurses station
- EMR: Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700)
- Self-scheduling with an every-third-weekend requirement; Friday and Saturday nights are considered the weekend for this shift
- Floating required to PCU and behavioral health (McDermott) units
- 13-week assignment
Requirements
- Active IA or Compact RN license (must be active — pending licenses are not accepted)
- Current BLS certification required (pending certifications not accepted)
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- BSN not required
- Epic EMR experience
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked — must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Valid driver's license required for consideration
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (driver's license used to verify permanent address)
- Candidates must not have been directly employed full-time, part-time, or PRN by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year (PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered)

- Unit emphasizes hourly rounding and bedside shift report
- Travelers should be flexible, self-directed, and comfortable with change in a dynamic unit environment
- Orientation consists of one week of classroom training followed by one 12-hour shift on the unit; a pass/fail open-book exam is administered during orientation — a score of 90% or higher is required to continue the assignment
- Navy blue scrubs required; artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
- All requested RTO must be submitted upfront — additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
- Holiday coverage expectations apply to this position
