Description
American Traveler is seeking a night shift RN for a Progressive Care Unit surgical oncology floor requiring an active OH or compact license and 2 years of acute care experience.
Details
- Surgical oncology PCU/Med-Surg mixed acuity unit within a cancer hospital
- Cares for adult and geriatric patients with surgical oncology, hepatobiliary, colorectal, and plastics/reconstructive diagnoses
- Night shift, 3x12-hour shifts (7:00 PM-7:30 AM)
- May be scheduled as a 12-hour Day/Night rotating contract with shift assignments reviewed every 4-week period
- Staffing ratio goal of 1:4, but can be up to 1:5
- Weekend requirements vary based on unit needs with no set/blocked scheduling
- All travelers may be required to float within scope of practice
- Uses Epic for computerized charting
Requirements
- Active OH or compact RN license required in hand at time of consideration
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- ONS Chemo certification preferred
- Minimum 2 years of current acute care experience within the last 12 months required
- At least 1 year of PCU experience required
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Nursing education must be from an ACEN or CCNE accredited program
- Experience with respiratory care and BiPAP/CPAP management required
- Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac) preferred
- Tracheostomy care/management experience required
- Cardiac telemetry monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation, and management experience required
- Two professional references required, with at least one from a Manager/Director or formal leadership role and the second from a Charge RN; coworker references not accepted
Additional Information
- Care involves chemotherapy administration, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, and management of oncologic emergencies including cytokine release syndrome
- Manages insulin and heparin drips as part of patient care
- Strong emphasis on infection prevention protocols and fall prevention
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates accepted at the same rate
- Former employees eligible for travel assignment after 6+ months away from the facility
- Current employees are ineligible to be hired as a traveler at this health system
- Ohio fingerprinting process must be completed urgently upon contract signing; candidates outside Ohio but within driving distance must travel to a fingerprinting location, while those farther away will complete a mailed fingerprinting packet
- RTO must be submitted with application and built into the contract, limited to 7 days or less

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
