Description
American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit position requiring a ME or compact RN license and at least 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience.
Details
- Free-standing acute inpatient psychiatric facility with contracted ER access 5 minutes away
- Psychiatric unit serving both pediatric (ages 5-18) and adult (18+) patients, with required floating between units
- 94 total beds (50 Pediatric, 44 Adult)
- Patients are medically cleared prior to admission with both voluntary and involuntary admissions
- Pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria
- Adult diagnoses commonly include schizophrenia, MDD, and bipolar disorder
- RN patient ratios are 1:5-6 on days and 1:13 on nights with resource support
- Shift is 2p-11:30p, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation required every other Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday coverage required in rotation
- No on-call requirements, though overtime is available
- Uses Cerner charting system and Pyxis medication dispensing
- Modified self-scheduling process with predetermined weekend rotation
Requirements
- Active RN license (ME state or compact) required
- BLS certification required
- MOAB certification obtained during onsite orientation
- Minimum 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience required
- Pediatric Behavioral Health experience preferred
- Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints required
- Comfortable administering medication passes and leading group therapy sessions
- Comfortable floating between pediatric and adult psychiatric units
Additional Information
- Provide medical and psychiatric nursing care alongside specialized therapies such as pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens
- Seclusion rooms are used when clinically necessary; chemical restraints are not used
- May occasionally care for medically cleared substance use disorder or detoxing patients on CIWA protocol
- Support team includes DON/CNO, Nurse Manager, House Administrator, Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatrist, Occupational Therapist, and onsite Security
- Opportunity to serve as Charge Nurse or Code Leader during patient escalations, though not required
- Debriefing completed after escalation events, with scenario-based de-escalation training offered every other week
- Orientation includes one week of day shifts followed by a second week on the contracted shift
- Scrub requirement: any solid, professional-colored scrubs
- Free onsite parking available
- Heavy snow conditions expected during winter months
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Candidates must not have prior permanent employment history with any Northern Light Health hospital
- Flu vaccination required for start clearance, with medical exemptions only considered
