Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Medical ICU position requiring active or pending MI licensure and at least 1 year of recent ICU experience.

Details

  • Work in the Medical ICU (MICU) of a hospital that also cares for a mix of ICU and PCU patients
  • Patient ratios range from 1:1 up to 1:4 depending on acuity, with PCU/general med and transfer patients grouped at 4:1 or 4-3:1 based on acuity
  • ICU and PCU patients may be combined in a 3:1 ratio based on acuity
  • Ventilator patients are cared for at a 2:1 ratio
  • Cooling, CRRT, or high-acuity patients are cared for at a 1:1 ratio
  • Unit manages an average of 3 ventilated patients per day
  • Common diagnoses include COPD, encephalopathy, drug overdose, DKA, AKI, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and A-fib
  • Performs and supports special procedures including CRRT, HD, A-line placement, CVC placement, trach placement, and chest tube placement
  • Uses specialized equipment such as cooling machines, Bair Huggers, and massive transfusion protocols
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
  • Night shift schedule, 3x12-hour shifts from 19:00-7:30
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday coverage required
  • Floats to other ICU and Med-Surg units as census needs dictate, with typical Med-Surg ratios of approximately 1:5-7 patients per RN
  • Travelers float in rotation with staff RNs

Requirements

  • Active or pending Michigan RN license (must provide concrete ETA and proof of application if pending)
  • Current certifications: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), and NIHSS (must be renewed annually)
  • Minimum of 1 year recent ICU experience required
  • Charge RN experience preferred
  • Community hospital experience preferred
  • Skilled in IV therapy including arterial line management, blood product administration, central line care, and PICC line management
  • Experienced in respiratory/thoracic care including BiPAP/CPAP management, ventilator management, HFNC, ABG interpretation, and suctioning
  • Skilled in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and multisystem organ dysfunction care
  • Experienced with continuous IV sedation, vasoactive and cardiac drip titration, and emergency medication administration
  • Skilled in CVA/acute stroke management
  • Experienced in chronic/acute renal failure and CVVHD/CRRT care
  • Proof of flu vaccination required, or exemption request submitted within 48 hours of signing
  • Supervisor-level references required

Additional Information

  • Provide direct nursing care to critically ill patients with mixed ICU and PCU acuity levels
  • ICU physicians may retain lower-acuity patients in the unit rather than transferring, requiring flexible grouping with 3-4 patient assignments
  • Facility is designated as a Primary Stroke Destination by The Joint Commission
  • Travelers are given priority for floating assignments
  • No RTO permitted during the first two weeks of the assignment, and all RTO requests must be submitted prior to offer
  • Locals accepted at the same rate with no radius restrictions
  • Previous internal travelers may return after 6 months; previous permanent staff may return after 1 year
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Annual self-reported training modules required, completed during orientation and annually
