Description
American Traveler is seeking an RN for a PCU/MS Float position requiring 2+ years of stepdown/telemetry experience and comfort floating across all PCU and MS units.
Details
- PCU/MS Float role covering all PCU and Medical-Surgical units in an acute care teaching hospital
- PCU average patient ratio of 5:1, MS average ratio of 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)
- Night shift schedule, 3x12 hours, 6:45p-7:15a
- Epic EMR experience required
- Floating required across PCU and MS units, with staffing needs reassessed every 4 hours (up to 2-3 float assignments per shift)
- Weekend requirements include either every-other-weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week scheduling block
- Must work at least one holiday per 13-week contract (two holidays required during winter holiday period)
- Facility may call off up to 1 shift per 2-week period
Requirements
- Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required (pending license accepted only for candidates holding a single-state license from a non-compact state)
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- CPI, NIHSS, and Trauma certifications preferred
- Minimum 2 years of relevant nursing experience required
- Epic charting experience required
- Level I Trauma experience preferred
- Skilled in IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration
- Experience with central line care, tracheostomy management, and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, chest tubes)
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation/management, titrating cardiac drips, and Rapid Response/Code team response
- Experience managing PCA and heparin protocols, IV insulin administration, and endocrine/metabolic conditions
- Background in telemetry and stepdown-level care (PCU/DOU/IMC) with cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac cath settings
- PICC line management and stable ventilator experience preferred

- Provide direct patient care across PCU and Medical-Surgical units, adapting to varying patient acuities and ratios
- Work in a 703-bed acute care teaching hospital that serves as the region's only Level I Trauma Center for adults and pediatrics
- Facility is Magnet-designated for nursing excellence and affiliated with a medical school
- Certified as an Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates are not accepted; candidates residing within 100 miles of the facility (per driver's license address) are considered local, with limited exceptions for inpatient RNs living 50-99.9 miles away who may be considered for one 13-week assignment without extension eligibility
- Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year separation before returning as a traveler
- Travelers who have worked 365 days at the facility are not eligible to return, regardless of separation period, subject to case-by-case leadership review
- All RTO and scheduling requests must be submitted upfront with the initial submission
