Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a Staff Float Pool position requiring an AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience.

Details

• Float pool position within a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
• Home unit assigned on the first day of orientation, with floating to like units such as MedSurg-MedSurg, MedSurg-ICU (task only), MedSurg-ER/MedSurg holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MedSurg (task, limit of 3), or ICU-ER/ICU holds
• Potential unit assignments include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, and MedSurg/Ortho/Urology, each with distinct patient populations and required skill sets
• Patient ratios range from 1:4-6 depending on unit, with CNA support at 1:10-12
• 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a), 36-48 hours per week on a 4-week schedule cycle using Smart Square (no self-scheduling)
• Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
• No on-call requirements
• EMR: Cerner (Epic experience also considered)
• Equipment used includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
• Telemetry is monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours

Requirements

• Active RN license (AL state or compact) required
• BLS and NIHSS certifications required
• Minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience required
• Cerner experience required if candidate's background is strictly ICU
• Trauma/surgical experience of at least 1 year required for Trauma Surgical unit assignment
• Skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy/colostomy care, central line blood draws, and medication administration depending on unit
• Chemotherapy certification preferred for MedSurg/Oncology unit but not required
• Perm staff must have separated from employment for at least 6 months before returning as a traveler

Additional Information

• Duties include direct patient care such as turning patients, assisting with baths and ADLs, and maintaining high quality of care under lower patient ratios
• Unit support includes CNAs, HUC/receptionist, charge nurse (rarely takes patient assignment), phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
• Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ years will receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on the unit
• Rehire orientation length depends on last date worked at the facility
• Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific days off are not contractually guaranteed prior to arrival
• Up to 7 days of RTO can be pre-approved, excluding facility blackout dates which require additional approval
• Scrubs of any color are permitted
• Free parking available in the deck (2nd through 4th levels)
