Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a PACU position requiring an active MD or Compact RN license and 2+ years of PACU experience, with first-time travelers considered if they have strong PACU or ICU background.
Details
- Work in the PACU unit of a hospital setting with 16 rooms/beds
- Care for patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics
- Patient diagnoses include orthopedic, neurology, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, general surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, and gynecology cases
- Patient ratio of 1:4
- Day shift schedule with 3x12 hour shifts from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM
- 36 hours per week with every other weekend required
- 2 weekends required per schedule cycle
- Floating required within the PACU specialty, rotating with pre-op for this contract, with possible floating to a sister facility as needed
- Epic charting system experience preferred
- Holiday coverage required as scheduled
Requirements
- Active MD or Compact RN license required at time of consideration
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), AHA only for BLS/ACLS/PALS
- CPI certification required through the Calm Every Storm online vendor
- NRP or AAP certification accepted
- Minimum 2 years of PACU experience required
- First-time travelers accepted only with 3-5 years of strong PACU experience or 2 years of ICU experience
- Previous charge nurse experience preferred
- Teaching hospital, community hospital, LTAC, and Trauma Level I/II experience preferred
- Navy blue scrub color required
Additional Information
- Provide pre- and post-operative recovery care for a diverse surgical patient population
- Perform respiratory care including end-tidal CO2 monitoring, airway assessment, and extubation
- Manage cardiovascular cases including cardiac arrest response, sheath pulls, and post cath lab procedures
- Administer IV therapy, manage central lines and PICC lines, and perform phlebotomy as needed
- Provide care for neurological surgical patients including craniotomy and spine surgery recovery
- Administer and monitor medications including vasopressors, antiarrhythmics, and reversal agents
- Perform cardiac monitoring including arterial line and CVP management
- Support surgical specialties including bariatrics, cardiac, ortho, neuro, plastics, and robotics cases
- Provide pre/post-operative patient education, discharge instructions, and medication reconciliation
- Manage pain assessment using RASS and PCA pump protocols
- Travelers must live 50+ miles from the facility to be eligible unless locals are specifically accepted
- Maximum of 7 days RTO can be requested, with additional week required on the back end for requests of more than 4 consecutive days on new contracts
- One major holiday off during the winter season may be allowed depending on unit specifics
- Returning travelers must have been away from the health system for at least 6 months after their last assignment
- Former staff must be separated from the health system for 12 months before returning as a traveler
- Typically one contract and one extension allowed before a 6-month break is required before returning to the facility or unit
- On-call is not currently implemented for PACU but may be introduced with 30-day notice per union agreement
