Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring NE or compact RN licensure and prior stepdown experience.

Details

  • Acute care Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Stepdown setting within a Level 2 Trauma hospital
  • 40-bed unit with an average daily census of 24 patients
  • Patient ratios of 1:4-5 on both day and night shifts
  • Cares for adult patients with cardiac med/surg conditions, dialysis, cancer diagnoses, vascular issues, sepsis, adult respiratory conditions, stroke, post-stent, post-pacer placement, and renal failure
  • Uses EPIC EMR charting system
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and insulin
  • Competency in arterial lines required
  • Charge nurse present on each shift and takes an assignment
  • Patient care techs available at a 1:12 ratio
  • Utilizes high flow respiratory therapy equipment, with RNs required to troubleshoot
  • RNs must read and interpret their own telemetry strips
  • 12-hour day and night shifts (0630-1830 / 1830-0630)
  • Every other weekend requirement
  • Minimum of 2 holidays required within the contract time frame
  • Floating required to MedSurg or ICU to take PCU acuity patients
  • One day of unit-specific orientation provided
  • Unit uses overhead lifts in half the rooms, portable lifts, vein finders, and bladder scanners

Requirements

  • Active State or Compact (NLC) RN license required for the state of submission; pending licenses not accepted
  • Minimum of 2 years of RN experience required
  • BSN not required for this position
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS (active only; pending certifications not accepted)
  • Prior stepdown/PCU experience required
  • Competency in arterial line management required
  • Must provide a copy of driver's license, which will be used to verify permanent address
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor reference from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years worked, both including employment dates and rehire eligibility
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments
  • Must pass a pass/fail exam (open book, 90% required) during orientation on skills learned

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care to a diverse patient population, including a focus on serving Hispanic and Somali communities
  • Deliver titrated medication drips and monitor high-flow respiratory therapy equipment
  • Read and interpret own telemetry strips as part of daily patient monitoring
  • Navy blue scrub color required per dress code
  • Success on this unit requires being a team player who is flexible, adaptable, and communicates well, while being open to feedback
  • If placed on call, must be able to arrive within 30 minutes of being called back in
  • Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility, verified by driver's license
  • Candidates may not currently be employed full time, part time, or PRN with any CommonSpirit-associated facility, including CHI and/or Dignity
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-associated facility within the past year; PRN employment through outside staffing firms will be considered
  • Up to 7 days of requested time off (RTO) may be submitted upfront per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after submission
  • Facility may cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment, or 3 shifts for shorter assignments
  • Blocked scheduling will not be approved unless it is for weekends only
