Description
American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a 13-week MedSurg/Tele/PCU Float Pool night shift position requiring an AZ or compact RN license and at least 1 year of PCU experience.

- Acute care hospital setting within a MedSurg/Tele/PCU Float Pool
- Float pool covers MedSurg Tele and PCU units across two campuses, including inpatients holding in the ED
- West Campus MedTele unit has 95 beds divided into 4 areas with 10-room double occupancy pods
- West Campus Stepdown unit has 14 double occupancy rooms with an average census of 20
- East Campus NextCare is a 10-bed double occupancy unit with ICU and stepdown patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4 in PCU and 1:5-6 in MedSurg Tele
- Patient population includes geriatric and orthopedic patients along with post-procedural cardiac cath, post-MI, and post-CABG (post-op day 3-4) patients
- Strong cath lab program requiring care for groin sites in the stepdown unit
- RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Insulin
- Nurses must be comfortable managing the majority of these titratable drips
- Nurses must be able to interpret telemetry strips, with monitor techs supporting PCU and MedSurg Tele units
- Respiratory equipment used includes CPAP and BiPAP at night in MedSurg, and BiPAP, CPAP, and Heated High Flow in PCU
- Nurse aides are utilized across all unit settings
- Charge nurses are assigned to each unit and do not take patient assignments
- EMR used is Cerner
- Shifts are 12-hour nights (7p-7a)
- Every other weekend required
- Schedule is published 6 weeks out in 4-week blocks, with block scheduling attempted for night shift
- Assigned units communicated via text message 2 hours prior to shift start
- Travel time between campuses is approximately 20-25 minutes
- No call or standby requirements
- Holiday coverage required as part of the permanent staff rotation
Requirements
- Active AZ or Compact RN license required
- BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum of 1 year of PCU experience required
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam within two attempts prior to signing a contract
- Comfort managing common titratable and set-rate drips required
- Ability to interpret telemetry strips required
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration
- Two professional references required: one supervisor reference from within the last 12 months worked and one peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years worked, including employment dates and rehire eligibility
Additional Information
- Provide nursing care across MedSurg Tele, PCU, and inpatient holding areas in the ED as part of a float pool team
- Given priority for float assignments among staff
- Orientation includes an 8-hour general hospital orientation day, plus a 12-hour shift at West MedTele and a 12-hour shift at West PCU
- Dress code currently requires solid color professional scrubs, transitioning to navy scrubs in October to align with system guidelines
- Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility
- Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) by any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity, within the past year
- Candidates previously employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
