Description

American Traveler is hiring an ICU RN for a mixed acuity unit requiring active AL or compact RN license and at least 1 year of ICU experience (2 years required for first-time travelers)

Details

  • Work in a 4 South PCU mixed acuity unit within a Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
  • 18-bed unit caring for intermediate care and non-vented ICU-level patients
  • Patient population includes neurological and post-procedural cases such as post-TNK, neuro IR procedures, hemorrhages/aneurysms, craniotomy/craniectomy, EVDs, and continuous EEG monitoring
  • Also treats respiratory failure, CHF, hypotension, sepsis, AMS, acute neurological diagnoses, DKA, and electrolyte abnormalities
  • RN to patient ratio is 1:3 based on acuity; CNA ratio is 1:12
  • 12-hour night shifts on a 36/48 schedule, working 7p-7a
  • Every other weekend rotation required, with occasional back-to-back weekends
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units/patient locations, including MS-MS, MS-ICU task, MS-ER/MS holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MS task (limit of 3), and ICU-ER/ICU holds
  • Uses Cerner EMR, Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs/Resparray monitors
  • Unit-specific equipment includes bedside monitors and bladder scanners

Requirements

  • Active AL or compact RN license required
  • BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 1 year of ICU experience required; first-time travelers must have 2 years of ICU experience
  • Experience managing patients on BiPAP/CPAP required
  • Skilled in cardiac rhythm interpretation, CVP monitoring, and hemodynamic line monitoring
  • Experience with post-surgical drains, trachs, and chest tubes required
  • Experience titrating drips including Cardizem, Dobutamine, Dopamine, Esmolol, Insulin, Cardene, Nitro, Levophed, and Epinephrine
  • Must be able to read and measure telemetry strips

Additional Information

  • Unit is supported by CNAs, a dedicated receptionist/HUC, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, rapid response team, and a resource nurse serving as educator and mentor
  • 24/7 respiratory therapy, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage available
  • Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ years receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on the unit
  • Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific dates off are not guaranteed prior to arrival
  • Up to 7 days of time off may be pre-approved, excluding blackout dates
  • Any scrub color is permitted
  • Free on-campus and parking deck parking available
  • Unit is in a formative stage, actively building culture with an emphasis on teamwork, accountability, and process improvement
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply with the required 2 years of ICU experience
  • Must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible for consideration
  • Former staff must wait 6 months after separation before returning as a traveler
