Description
American Traveler is seeking a Med/Surg RN for a Surgical Acute unit requiring at least 1 year of experience and an active IL RN license.
Details
- Acute care setting on a Surgical Acute Med/Surg unit with 63 beds (49 private, 9 observation)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios of 4-5 on days and 5-6 on nights, potentially up to 1:6 days and 1:7 nights when needed
- Common diagnoses include post-op surgical, trauma, and overflow medical patients requiring dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NGs, central lines, and TPN
- Heparin is the only titratable drip managed by RNs
- Charge RNs are pre-assigned and do not take patient assignments; house supervisor coverage is 24/7
- PCTs support the unit with ratios of 7-10 patients on days and 10-15 on nights, assisting with vitals, accu checks, ADLs, and mobility
- No ventilators on this unit; CPAP and high flow are used, with RT managing nebulizers and RNs able to place patients on CPAP
- Some patients are on telemetry monitored via Phillips monitors at a central station; bedside RNs do not read strips
- 12-hour day shifts from 0700-1930
- Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday)
- Rotating holiday schedule required every other holiday
- No call or standby requirements
- Travelers float first, to units with a similar level of experience
- Uses EPIC EMR
Requirements
- Active IL RN license required, or documented proof that the licensing process has been initiated
- BLS certification (AHA) required
- Minimum of 1 year of RN experience required
- Post-op patient care experience required
- Strong critical thinking skills and bedside manner required
- Comfortable asking for help when needed and working as part of a team
Additional Information
- Provide post-op and med/surg care including wound care, IV therapy, pain management, and management of drains, NGs, central lines, and TPN
- Unit orientation includes 2 shifts with a preceptor plus one 12-hour shift focused on EPIC and professional orientation with the unit educator
- Scrubs of any color are accepted
- Must pass a negative drug screen for all panels as part of the facility's drug-free campus policy
- COVID vaccination is not required
- Local candidates are accepted, with a reduced local pay rate applying to clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility
