Description
American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg-Neuro RN for a 13-week night shift assignment requiring NIHSS certification and a NE or compact RN license.
Details
- Acute care Level 1 trauma hospital setting on a 25-bed MedSurg/Tele Neuro unit
- Patient population includes strokes, stable neurological deficits, post neurosurgery procedures, and general MedSurg overflow such as joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, and sepsis
- Nurse to patient ratio of 1:5-6
- Nurse aides/patient care techs on unit at 1:10-20 ratio
- Charge nurse present each shift and takes an assignment
- Tele techs interpret strips, though RNs should maintain tele awareness
- RNs required to titrate Heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips, and manage PCA pumps
- Uses EPIC EMR
- 12-hour night shifts, with shift times of 0630-1900 or 1830-0700
- Scheduled by facility with limited block scheduling considered
- Weekend requirement of at least every other weekend, with additional shifts possible based on census
- Holiday coverage required for 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year's
- Floating required to other medical surgical areas or units with MedSurg overflow patients
- No respiratory therapy equipment troubleshooting required
Requirements
- Active RN license, Nebraska or Compact (NLC), required at time of submission
- BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Must pass a Friday open-book exam during orientation with a 90% score to continue the assignment
- Driver's license required to confirm candidate resides outside the 50-mile radius
- No license or background check issues permitted
- Artificial fingernails prohibited in all patient care areas

- Provide direct patient care on a busy MedSurg/Tele Neuro unit with frequent same-day discharges and admissions
- Success on this unit requires strong time management, attendance, teamwork, and a patient-first attitude
- Serves a culturally diverse patient population including Spanish, Karen, and Burmese speaking patients
- Mechanical lifts available in every other room
- Strong emphasis on hourly rounding and responsiveness to patients
- Unit provides 2 days of unit/department-specific orientation
- RN dress code is navy blue scrubs
- Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) with any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year
- Travel experience preferred, but strong candidates without travel experience will be considered
