Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Surgical ICU position at a Level 1 Trauma hospital, requiring critical care skills and a TX or compact RN license.

Details

  • Level 1 Trauma Surgical ICU with 12 beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:2 to 1:3 depending on acuity or downgrade status
  • Patient population includes liver/kidney transplant, vascular surgeries, ENT cancer surgeries, complicated airway cases, abdominal surgeries, and deep tissue flaps
  • Day shift schedule, 7a-7p, every other weekend required
  • EPIC EMR experience required
  • Intensivist and APP coverage on the unit 24/7, with RT support also available 24/7
  • No self-scheduling, unit determines schedule based on needs
  • Weekend requirement of 4-6 shifts within a 6-week period
  • Standby requirement only if unit closes due to low census, rare occurrence
  • Floating required to other ICUs within the hospital based on skill set, travelers float first
  • 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation provided

Requirements

  • Active TX or compact RN license required
  • BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required, 3+ years and previous travel experience preferred
  • Experience with CRRT, hemodynamic monitoring, chest tubes, ventilators, and various drains/surgical sites required
  • Must be able to titrate drips including vasopressin, epinephrine, levophed, heparin, dobutamine, dopamine, versed, hydromorphone, fentanyl, ketamine, nimbex, esmolol, and cardene
  • Strong critical thinking, early recognition of patient condition changes, and clear provider communication skills required
  • EPIC EMR experience required
  • Copy of driver's license required for consideration
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including dates of employment and rehire eligibility

Additional Information

  • Charge nurse present on each shift, typically taking a full patient assignment depending on staffing
  • Nurse aides/patient care techs available intermittently, assisting with ADLs, blood glucose checks, and transport
  • RNs are responsible for reading their own telemetry strips using Phillips monitors
  • Dress code includes teal scrub bottoms with black or coordinating printed scrub top, no fleece jackets, and no shellac, dip, or acrylic nails
  • Daily and monthly parking options available near the facility, with associated fees
  • Candidates with prior experience at a busy, high-acuity hospital are preferred
  • First-time travelers may be considered if they meet experience requirements
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity Health, within the past year
