Description
American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Pediatric Psych position requiring behavioral health experience and willingness to float between pediatric and adult units.
Details
- Free standing acute inpatient psychiatric facility with contracted ER 5 minutes away
- 94 total beds - 50 pediatric, 44 adult
- Patients arrive medically cleared from the ED with minimal lines, drains, or tubes
- Both involuntary and voluntary admissions
- Pediatric patients ages 5-18, adult patients 18+ including geriatric
- Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria
- Common adult diagnoses include schizophrenia, MDD, and bipolar disorder
- No forensic patients or inmates; seclusion rooms used as needed; occasional medically cleared SUD/detox patients on CIWA protocol
- Offers traditional medical and psychiatric care alongside specialized therapies such as pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens
- RN patient ratios: Day 1:5-6, Night 1:13 with resource support
- 12-hour night shifts (7P-7A), 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation every other Saturday/Sunday
- No on-call requirements; overtime available
- Uses Cerner charting system and Pyxis medication dispensing
- Floating required between pediatric and adult psychiatric units
Requirements
- Active RN license (ME State or Compact)
- Current BLS certification required; MOAB certification obtained during onsite orientation
- Minimum 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience required
- Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred
- Skilled in de-escalation techniques and physical restraint procedures (chemical restraints not used)
- Comfortable administering medication passes and leading group therapy sessions
- Strong documentation skills required
- Must submit full Social Security number for consideration
- Two references within the past year required, including at least one from a Supervisor, Manager, or Director (Charge nurse acceptable, no peer references)
- Copies of all certifications and a separate copy of driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Support on the unit includes DON/CNO, Nurse Manager, House Administrator, Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted Phlebotomist, Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatrist, and Occupational Therapist
- Security staff on site, though unit staff (nurses and techs) respond directly to patient escalations using a code leader system
- Debriefing conducted after escalation events, with ongoing scenario-based de-escalation training available every other week
- Orientation includes one week of day shifts followed by a second week on the contracted shift
- Modified self-scheduling process with predetermined weekend rotation
- Expected to work holidays in rotation
- Scrub requirement: any solid, professional-appearing color
- Free parking available on site
- Heavy snow conditions expected during winter months
- Opportunity to serve as Charge Nurse, though not required
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Candidates who have previously worked in a permanent capacity at any Northern Light Health hospital are not eligible
- Flu vaccination required for clearance to start, with medical exemptions only accepted subject to client review
