Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced ED RN for a 13-week night shift assignment at a Trauma Level 4 emergency department requiring TNCC, ACLS, and prior travel or small hospital experience.

Details

• Acute care setting in a Trauma Level 4 Emergency Department (not STEMI receiving or a stroke center)
• Currently 7 beds with an expansion to 14 planned in the fall
• Staffing includes 3 RNs plus charge, with swing shifts at 9, 11, and 3
• Separate triage area available; travelers with prior triage experience may be utilized
• ER holds are intermixed within the department rather than a separate holding area
• No dedicated psych/seclusion rooms as the facility is not a licensed psych facility (voluntary patients only)
• No in-house security; dispatch available if needed
• Approximately 60 patients treated per 24-hour period
• Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-5 for non-acute patients and 2:1 for resuscitations depending on acuity
• Patient population includes trauma, burns, car accidents, water rescue, general surgical, orthopedic injuries, OB, and STEMI/GI bleed send-outs
• Approximately 20 trauma cases per month due to recreational area location
• Life flight services available as needed
• Common drips include heparin, pressors, and blood products
• Limited ICU holds, typically managed by ICU staff though ER RNs may assist
• 24-hour physician coverage with additional mid-level providers from 11a-11p
• Charge Nurse and House Supervisor roles present, with charge nurses taking assignments as needed on nights
• CNAs, techs, unit clerks, and sitters are shared resources from other units without fixed ratios
• Respiratory Therapy in-house 24/7 for the whole hospital; nurses may need to administer breathing treatments occasionally
• Nursing is responsible for performing all EKGs
• Monitor techs assist with telemetry monitoring (Mindray equipment) but RNs are responsible for strip interpretation
• X-Ray and CT available in the ER; techs handle transport unless the patient is unstable, in which case a nurse accompanies
• RNs perform the majority of IV starts, with phlebotomy available as an additional resource
• Uses EPIC EMR
• 12-hour night shifts on a 7-7 schedule with manager-created scheduling (no self-scheduling)
• Weekend rotation required every other weekend
• Floating not required but desired if experience in another unit is available
• No standing call or standby requirements historically for travelers

Requirements

• Active RN license required
• BLS and ACLS certification required
• TNCC required
• NIHSS certification required (may be completed within 30 days of start)
• NRP certification required (may be completed within 30 days of start via facility-provided class)
• PALS or ENPC certification required (interchangeable)
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• Previous smaller hospital experience preferred
• Previous travel nursing experience preferred
• EPIC EMR experience preferred

Additional Information

• Deliver emergency nursing care across a wide range of acuities and diagnoses, including trauma, cardiac, orthopedic, OB, and general medical cases
• Work closely with a care team that includes physicians, mid-levels, charge nurses, house supervisors, CNAs, techs, and monitor techs
• Unit-specific orientation typically includes 2 shifts with an RN during the first orientation week
• Holiday coverage required as scheduled
• No specific scrub color required; solid colors or prints are acceptable
• First-time travelers may be considered given relevant experience
