Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced ER RN for a Level III trauma, STEMI and stroke receiving Emergency Department, requiring TX or compact RN licensure and EPIC experience for an upcoming EMR conversion.

Details

• Level III trauma center with STEMI and Stroke Receiving designation
• 18 beds including 4 critical rooms used for trauma or codes, plus a 6-bed Fast Track
• Separate triage area where travelers are allowed to staff
• ER holds are intermixed and cared for by ER nurses
• One separate psych/seclusion room available
• Security is in-house 24/7 and rounds through the ER
• Treats approximately 70 patients per day on average
• Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3-4 depending on acuity
• Patient population includes pediatrics, cardiac, STEMI, stroke, some trauma, and general ER cases such as abdominal pain, respiratory, and GI complaints
• Multisystem trauma patients are transferred out to another facility
• Common drips include pressors, sedation, and other standard ER medications
• MD in house 24/7 with 2 midlevels staggered during busy times
• Charge nurse is generally patient-free
• 2 PCTs per shift, who may occasionally be pulled to sit with patients
• Respiratory Therapy in the ER 24/7 performing ABGs, breathing treatments, and managing ventilators; RNs perform EKGs and troubleshoot RT equipment
• No monitor techs on the unit; RNs are required to read and interpret their own telemetry strips
• X-Ray and CT located near the ER with assistance available for transport
• Phlebotomy handles lab draws
• EMR: MEDITECH, transitioning to EPIC
• 12-hour shifts, evenings/mid-shifts with staggered start times (9, 11, 1, 3)
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday coverage worked into rotation with permanent staff
• No call or standby requirement
• Travelers are typically first to float if floating is needed
• Unit/department orientation is 1-3 shifts depending on experience, including a preceptor checkoff packet

Requirements

• Active TX or compact RN license required
• Minimum 2 years of ER experience required
• Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NIHSS
• EPIC experience required due to upcoming EMR conversion
• Must pass the Advanced Dysrhythmia exam (83% or higher) prior to contract signing, with up to three attempts allowed
• Copy of driver's license required at time of consideration to validate legal name matches government-issued ID

Additional Information

• Provide direct patient care in a busy, high-acuity Emergency Department
• May be asked to precept as needed by the unit
• Not responsible for arranging placement for psych patients meeting inpatient criteria; a separate screening team handles setup
• Navy scrub color required, including navy undershirts; scrub jackets optional but must be navy if worn
• Call-outs are strongly discouraged and may lead to termination
• Facility welcomes travelers who are open to extending their assignment
• Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI and Dignity, within the past year; PRN employment through outside staffing firms will be considered
