Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Level III Emergency Department position requiring TX or compact licensure and prior ER experience.

Details

• Level III Trauma, STEMI and Stroke Receiving Emergency Department in an acute care hospital
• 18 beds/trauma bays including 4 critical rooms used for trauma or codes, plus a 6-bay Fast Track area
• Separate triage area where travelers are permitted to staff
• ER holds are intermixed with the general ER, with ER nurses providing care
• One dedicated Psych/seclusion room, with 24/7 in-house security rounding in the ER
• Treats approximately 70 patients per day with nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:3-4 depending on acuity
• Patient population includes pediatrics, cardiac, STEMI, stroke, general ER cases (abdominal pain, respiratory, GI), and some trauma with multisystem trauma transferred out
• Administers common ER drips including pressors and sedation
• MD in house 24/7 with 2 midlevels staggered during busy times
• Charge nurse is generally patient-free
• 2 PCTs per shift who may occasionally be pulled for sitter duties
• RT in the ER handles ABGs, breathing treatments, and ventilator management; RNs troubleshoot equipment and perform their own EKG interpretation (no monitor techs)
• X-Ray and CT located near the ER with transport assistance provided
• Phlebotomy team draws labs
• 12-hour Day and Night shifts starting at 6:45, with mid-shifts starting at 9, 11, 1, and 3
• Every other weekend required, with holiday coverage worked into permanent staff rotation
• No call or standby requirements
• Travelers typically do not float but would be first to float and serve as a helping hand if needed
• Uses MEDITECH as the charting system, though this position is transitioning to EPIC
• EPIC experience required for this EPIC conversion assignment

Requirements

• Active TX or Compact RN license required
• Minimum 2 years of ER experience required
• Required certifications: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), PALS (AHA), TNCC, and NIHSS
• EPIC experience required due to upcoming EMR conversion
• Must pass the Advanced Dysrhythmia exam (83%) prior to signing contract, with up to three attempts allowed
• Copy of driver's license required at time of consideration, with legal name matching government-issued ID
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including employment dates and rehire eligibility

Additional Information

• Provide direct patient care in a high-volume Level III Emergency Department
• May be asked to precept as needed by the unit
• Not responsible for setting up placement for psych patients meeting inpatient criteria; a separate team screens and arranges placement
• Unit orientation consists of 1-3 shifts depending on experience, including a checkoff packet reviewed with a preceptor
• Scrub color is navy, including undershirts; scrub jackets are optional but must also be navy if worn
• Call-outs are strongly discouraged and could result in termination
• Facility encourages travelers to extend their assignments

• Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI and/or Dignity, within the past year; PRN employment through outside staffing firms will be considered
