Description
American Traveler is seeking a Registered Nurse for a Stepdown unit position requiring active VA or compact RN license, Epic experience, and NIH Stroke Scale certification.
Details
- Work in a 12-bed Step Down unit utilizing critical care and neuroscience principles at the intermediate level
- Patient population includes neuro trauma, subarachnoid, intraventricular and intracerebral hemorrhage, ENT cancer patients post tumor resection and flap reconstruction, and post-operative spine patients
- Patient ratio of 1:3
- Day shift schedule (3x12 hours, 7:00 AM-7:00 PM)
- 13-week assignment with scheduling of 36s or 48s
- Every other weekend and every other holiday required, including 2 of the 3 winter holidays
- Floating required within scope of practice per facility float policy
- Epic EMR experience required
Requirements
- Active VA or compact RN license (pending license accepted if in-hand by Wednesday before start date)
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- BSN preferred
- Epic charting system experience required
- Skilled in neurological/psychiatric care including aneurysms and repair, craniotomy, CVA, intracranial bleeds, lumbar drains, pre/post neurosurgery, seizure disorders, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury
- Experience with IV therapy/phlebotomy, arterial line management, blood product administration, peripheral and PICC line care
- Respiratory care skills including BiPAP/CPAP, high flow nasal cannula, nasal cannula, oxygen administration, and tracheostomy care/management
- Experience with feeding tube care, heparin protocols, cardiac and vasoactive drip management (no titration), PCA, and cardiac monitoring/dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- Knowledge of isolation precautions/PPE and IV insulin protocols
- Experience in neuro stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/stepdown, and telemetry settings
- Two professional references required
Additional Information
- Provide critical care and neuroscience-based nursing care to a complex intermediate-level patient population
- Up to 40 hours of RTO approved per 13-week contract, with all RTO disclosed at time of consideration
- Any vacation time planned between sign date and start date must be disclosed to coordinate an appropriate start date
- Previous UVA Health permanent staff or internal/external travelers must have a 1-year separation and leadership approval before returning
- External travelers cannot exceed 365 total assignment days and are not eligible to return once that threshold is reached
- Specialty-specific orientation modules required, with up to 16 non-billable hours recorded in Workday
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
