Description
American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Med/Surg Ortho Trauma unit requiring 2+ years of experience and a NE or compact RN license.
Details
- Acute care Level 1 trauma hospital setting on the Med Tele/Ortho unit, 4th Floor North & South
- 55-bed unit with nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6
- Patient population includes joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive
- 12-hour night shifts, scheduled 1830-0700
- Uses EPIC EMR
- RNs required to titrate heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips, and manage PCA pumps
- Charge nurse present each shift and takes a patient assignment
- Nurse aides/patient care techs on unit with ratios of 1:10-20
- Tele techs interpret monitor strips; RNs should maintain basic tele awareness
- Every other weekend work required, with potential for additional coverage based on department needs
- Schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
- Floating required to other medical surgical areas or units with MedSurg patients awaiting a bed
- 2-3 holidays required between Thanksgiving and New Year's
Requirements
- Active RN license (NE State or Compact/NLC) required, pending licenses not accepted
- BLS (AHA) certification required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Acute care and Level 1 trauma setting experience preferred
- EPIC EMR experience preferred
- Driver's license copy required for consideration
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
Additional Information
- Provide direct patient care to medical surgical and orthopedic trauma patients, including joint replacement and fracture cases
- Strong focus on hourly rounding and responsiveness to patient needs
- Manage a high volume of daily discharges and admissions
- Success on this unit requires strong time management, good attendance, teamwork, compassion, and patient-first care
- Unit serves a culturally diverse patient population, including Spanish, Karen, and Burmese-speaking patients
- Mechanical lifts available in every other patient room
- 2 days of unit-specific orientation provided
- Navy blue scrubs required for RNs
- Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
- RNs complete a pass/fail open-book exam during orientation covering skills learned, requiring a 90% score to pass
- Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for the position, as verified by driver's license
- Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be requested upfront per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after submission

I worked 4South/ the people are amazing and flexible, helpful, and supportive to work with. The charges are incredibly helpful.
Cons
Poor communication between residents/ attendings l which affects what is told to nursing and communicated to nursing. This was a huge issue working here. Also the resources are low, things always out of stock on the floor, only one translator / bladder scanner per floor , things like that.
