Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced Emergency Department RN for a Level 1 trauma center requiring at least 6 months of Level 1 trauma experience and a valid AZ or compact RN license.

- Acute care Level 1 Trauma Emergency Department setting
- 36 acute beds and 54 subacute beds with a separate 6-bed trauma bay (travelers not assigned to trauma bays)
- 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Uses Cerner EMR
- Philips telemetry monitors with strip-reading required
- 12-hour night shifts
- 4 weekend shifts per month (Saturday/Sunday) at unit discretion
- Holiday coverage required as needed
- Floating required among St. Joseph's Main, St. Joseph's Westgate, AZ General Laveen, and free-standing EDs in Litchfield Park and Glendale, approximately 30 minutes apart, including mid-shift floats
- 2 Charge RNs available with light or task-only patient loads
- 4 PCTs assigned as sitters
- Respiratory Therapy manages ventilators and is available 24/7
- Pharmacist available in the ED 10 hours per day, with 24/7 pharmacy support
- IV team includes ultrasound-trained core RNs
- Hospitalists, intensivists, midlevels, and anesthesia available in-house
- High patient volume facility treating approximately 88,000 patients annually (250-300 per day)
- Common diagnoses include trauma, burns, psychiatric holds (30-40), spinal cord injuries, and chest pain cases, with pediatric trauma patients transferred out
Requirements
- Active AZ or Compact RN license required, pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of ER experience required
- At least 6 months of Level 1 trauma experience required
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS (ENPC cannot substitute for PALS)
- TNCC and ATCN certifications preferred
- Must pass a Dysrhythmia (DYS) exam prior to accepting an offer, with up to 2 attempts allowed
- Must pass a sterile technique exam (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing change) on day 1 of orientation
- Must have own vehicle
- Must maintain natural hair color and no facial piercings
- Men must be clean shaven to meet fit-test requirements
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including dates of employment and rehire eligibility
Additional Information
- Provide emergency and trauma nursing care across a high-volume Level 1 trauma center
- Receive 2-3 shifts of floor-specific orientation
- Complete SIMs Lab competency for Foley catheter insertion and port-a-cath insertion (sterile field technique)
- Additional orientation includes education on lifts, restraints, and wound care
- Scrub color required: Navy
- Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be considered, as verified by driver's license address
- Failure of the DYS exam or sterile technique exam after 2 attempts results in a 6-month do-not-use status with CommonSpirit Arizona and Sacramento regions
- Candidates may not have been directly employed by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; PRN employment through outside staffing firms is acceptable
- Facility may cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment (3 shifts for shorter assignments)
