Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring 2 years of high-acuity med-surg/PCU experience and a NC or compact RN license.

Details

  • Mixed-acuity 48-bed Progressive Care Unit caring for PCU and MS/Tele patients
  • Patient ratios of 1:4-5, with occasional 1:6 in extreme situations
  • Patient population includes COPD, pneumonia, respiratory distress, COVID-19, flu, and PE cases
  • Unit cares for chronic trach/vent patients, with no nurse assigned more than one vent patient at a time
  • CNA staffing ratio of 9-10:1
  • Night shift, 12-hour shifts (3x12), 18:45-07:15
  • Every other weekend required
  • Float requirement to like units
  • 13-26 week assignment length, 36 hours/week offered
  • Block scheduling available when unit needs are met
  • Unit uses Pyxis, Epic, and SBAR charting systems

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license (pending OK for submittal)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an RN required, including high-acuity med-surg with occasional PCU patients
  • Must have prior experience with 1:6 patient ratios within the last 5 years
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • NIHSS certification preferred
  • Epic charting experience preferred
  • Skills required: IV starts, ventilator management, telemetry monitoring, CPAP/BiPAP management, and interpretation/management of dysrhythmias
  • Additional preferred skills: chest tube management, tracheostomy care, central line care, cardiac/vasoactive drip titration, and IV insulin protocols
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start

Additional Information

  • Unit resources include an Admission/Discharge nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, Vascular Access Team, RRT, Code Team, and Behavioral Health Team
  • A team lead rounds the unit at a 3:1 ratio, with 2 respiratory therapists and an assistant nurse manager present on all shifts including weekends
  • Unit orientation is 24 hours with weekly orientation sessions
  • Pre-start learning modules required (approximately 8-10 hours for acute care roles), completed online and annually
  • Scrubs not provided; white or navy blue required
  • Must work 2 of 3 major holidays
  • Up to 7 days of RTO can be auto-approved if not falling on a holiday; no RTO permitted during the first week of assignment
  • Local candidates accepted at a lower rate within 50 miles of the facility
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Former Novant Health or New Hanover employees (PERM/PRN/EP) must wait 12 months before applying and disclose prior employment details for facility approval
  • Travel pairs allowed if on different units with separate transportation and schedules
