Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position requiring 2+ years of MedSurg experience and a WI or compact RN license.
Details
- Float Pool position covering MedSurg units including MS1 General Medical Surgical, MS2 Ortho/Neuro, MS2 Cardiac, and MedSurg patients in ER Holding/Boarding
- MS1 patients include general surgical (gallbladder, appendectomy, colectomy, ostomy, TURP), general medical (cellulitis, GI bleeds, CHF, COPD), oncology, outpatient infusions, and some pediatric patients over age 1
- MS2 Ortho/Neuro patients include observation (chest pain, dizziness, syncope), ortho (total hips, knees, shoulders), and neuro (spine surgeries, strokes, TIA, altered mental status)
- MS2 Cardiac patients include post-procedure cardiac care (cath, TEE, cardioversion) and general cardiac conditions (heart failure, chest pain, arrhythmias)
- Patient ratios are 1:4-6 on days and 1:6 on nights
- 12-hour day shifts from 7a-7p, with shift times of 1845-0715 and 0645-1915
- Every other weekend rotation required
- No on-call requirements, though staff may be placed on call for a shift with a 30-minute arrival window if called in
- Uses EPIC EMR, Alaris IV pumps, and Pyxis medication dispensing
- Remote tele monitoring supported by tele techs, with possible RN coverage if tele techs are short-staffed
Requirements
- Active WI or compact RN license required
- Minimum 2 years of MedSurg experience required
- BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Skills required: chest tube management, stable trach management, IV skills, port/central line management, foley insertion/care, feeding tube management, and cardiac rhythm interpretation
- Experience managing insulin and heparin/argatroban drips required
- Experience titrating Cardizem and amiodarone drips preferred; manager approval needed if no experience
- Familiarity with CPAP/BiPAP/Airvo equipment required (RT manages equipment)
- EPIC EMR experience required
- Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the last year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN required
- Candidate DOB and last 4 of SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- Provide direct patient care across multiple MedSurg units, flexing to wherever MedSurg patients are located including ER Holding/Boarding
- Unit support includes HUC (days only), CNAs, charge nurse, 24/7 RT and hospitalist coverage, and weekday PT/OT/ST services
- Phlebotomy support available for peripheral lab draws; hard sticks escalated to house supervisor
- Orientation includes one full shift for login access and paperwork, followed by unit-specific orientation
- Schedules are built 4-6 weeks out and typically provided 2 weeks in advance; block scheduling considered but not guaranteed
- Holiday coverage expectations include working up to 50% of holidays during the contract, or as low as 2 holidays per year depending on unit
- Scrubs must be a solid professional color with no graphics, logos, or designs
- Free parking is available on site
- Facility is a Level IV Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a traveler-friendly, team-oriented culture
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates accepted at the same pay rate with no radius restrictions
- Former employees of the health system or its subsidiaries must be separated for at least 12 months before becoming eligible for travel assignments
