Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a PCU/Stepdown unit position requiring a CA RN license and prior ICU stepdown or PCU experience.
Details
- Critical care stepdown unit with 14 beds/7 rooms
- 1:3 nurse to patient ratio
- Patient population includes ICU stepdown patients, TBI/trauma patients, major surgery, CEA, and sepsis cases
- Uses Cerner EMR
- 12-hour day shifts beginning at 6:45am, 3 shifts per week
- Self-scheduling available with schedules typically made 2-3 weeks in advance
- Weekend requirement of 4 shifts in a 4-week schedule (Sat/Sun for days)
- First to float, with floating to Tele or MedSurg units
- No call or standby requirements
- One nursing aide typically covers all 14 beds
- RNs required to titrate drips including Precedex, dopamine, dobutamine, and levophed
Requirements
- Active CA RN license (Standard or Compact) currently in hand, pending licenses not accepted
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- COVID vaccine required
- 2-3 years of experience in a PCU or ICU stepdown specialty unit required
- Experience with arterial and CVP pressure lines, titrating pressors, precedex, and trach/stable vented patients required
- Must pass Relias Dysrhythmia exam before offer can be confirmed
- Must pass sterile technique test for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes on first day of orientation
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including employment dates and rehire eligibility
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration

- Provide close monitoring and care for stepdown patients transitioning from ICU level of care
- Training provided in telemetry and high-risk medications
- Navy blue scrub color required
- One shift of unit-specific orientation provided
- Very busy unit with frequent quick patient turnovers
- Strong emphasis on patient experience, HCAHPS scores, and core measures
- Close-knit, team-oriented unit culture with effective teamwork
- Holiday coverage required as part of staff rotation, holiday RTO may be considered but not guaranteed
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Candidates may not have been directly employed by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility (including CHI and/or Dignity) within the past year, though PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable
