Description
Travel RN: Emergency Department (Nights)
Specialty: ER / Emergency Nursing | Setting: Acute care, Level 1 Trauma Center
Shift: 12-hour nights (7p-7a) | Guaranteed hours: 36 per week
Charting system: Epic
About the Role
We're seeking an experienced Emergency Department RN to join a busy Level 1 Trauma Center ED. You'll care for patients of all ages, from newborns to the elderly, with a wide range of complaints, from minor injuries to critically ill and cardiac arrest patients. Level 1/2 trauma patients are handled in the trauma bay by a specialized trauma team. Travelers may care for trauma patients once they have been stabilized and moved to a pod bed.
Unit Snapshot
Beds: 65, all private, plus 2 trauma bays
Ratios: 1:3-5, depending on acuity and department needs
Staffing: ED physicians and/or mid-levels on at all times, with at least 3 attendings at all times. Two charge nurses per shift, one handling incoming patients and telemetry radios and the other managing department flow. A house supervisor is on 24/7.
Support staff: ED techs, respiratory therapists, and a monitor tech. Radiology staff or transport handle X-ray and CT transport.
Monitors: Philips. RNs are expected to interpret and act on rhythms, so ACLS is essential.
Labs: Nurses and techs draw labs. Boarders have labs drawn by phlebotomy.
Responsibilities
Assess, triage, and care for a diverse ED patient population
Titrate and manage a wide variety of drips, including vasopressor drips and cardiac drips, plus antihypertensive drugs
Interpret cardiac rhythms and respond appropriately
Care for stabilized trauma patients transferred from the trauma bay
Work with respiratory therapy for vent, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow needs
Document accurately in Epic
Requirements
Active Illinois RN license, or confirmation that the application process has been initiated
Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 prior travel assignment
BSN not required
Current ACLS, BLS, PALS, and TNCC (ENPC and TNS are also accepted for some of these)
Proficiency with vasopressor and cardiac drips
Ability to pass a drug screen. OSF is a drug-free campus, and a negative result on all panels is required.
Preferred: SANE RN experience; experience at a teaching hospital working with residents
Schedule and Policies
Shifts: 12-hour nights (7p-7a). Positions are not day/night rotating for nights-only roles, but confirm with your recruiter, since the facility also lists day and mid shifts.
Scheduling: The scheduling manager sets the schedule. Travelers don't self-schedule, but time-off requests included in the contract are reviewed and may be approved. Block scheduling is available when possible, and most travelers end up with 2 on, then 4 on, rotating; others work 6 in a row.
Weekends: Every other weekend. For nights, the weekend is Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun.
Holidays: Every other holiday, or based on department needs. This is negotiable with your contract request.
Call: No on-call or standby requirement
Floating: Rare. If floated, it's typically as a "help all" to other units, and an ED nurse would not be expected to take a team on another unit.
Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours every 13 weeks with no penalty and no need to pay back the shift
Orientation: 12 hours, non-billable. Guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.
Dress code: No specific scrub color. Tasteful scrubs with only solid-colored shirts underneath.
