Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Operating Room
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse
- Shift: Four 10-hour shifts per week (1:00 PM – 10:00 PM)
- Rooms: 23 operating rooms
- Experience Required: Minimum 3 years in specialty (Operating Room)
- First-timers: Not accepted
- Weekend Requirement: 1 weekend per month
- On-call Requirement: Yes, approximately 1 per week (though less frequent recently)
- Floating: Rarely, only within skill set to meet facility needs
- Block Schedule: Not accommodated
- Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live at least 50 miles from facility
- Licensure: Must have active Illinois nursing license or be in the application process
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support): Required
- CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room): Preferred
- Additional Certifications: ACLS, PALS may be required based on unit/specialty
Clinical Experience & Skills Required
- General OR and Trauma Experience: Required
- Level I Trauma Experience: Required
- Cerner Charting Experience: Preferred
- Surgical Case Experience:
- Bariatric: Laparoscopic assisted cases
- General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Partial/total Thyroidectomy, Whipple procedure
- Neurology: Cervical fusion, Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion
- Orthopedic: Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed and Open reduction of fractures
- Plastic Surgery: Free Flap - Microvascular
- Transplant: Organ donation
- Urology: Cystoscopy, Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy
- Trauma: Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, Motor vehicle accident (multiple injuries)
- Emergency Management Skills: Code response, Fire safety, Latex allergy management, Malignant Hyperthermia
- Equipment/Instrumentation: Electrosurgical units, Fiber optic light sources/cords, Hana tables
- Professional Knowledge: Administration of blood products, Infection control, Radiation safety, Specimen handling/labeling, Universal Protocol (Time out) procedure, Urinary bladder catheterization

Time Off & Scheduling
- All requested time off must be approved by manager
- Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay obligation
- On-call shifts count as called-off shifts if used in lieu of cancellation
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Valid/current US Driver’s License or State ID
- Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
- Illinois-specific searches including Department of Corrections, Most Wanted, and State Police registries within 30 days prior to start
- Fingerprint-based Illinois Healthcare Worker Registry results required for clinical candidates without an IL license (must be done in Illinois)
- Education verification (degree/transcript/diploma)
- Competency exam required for clinical candidates
- References: 2 professional references required for clinical candidates
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
- Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire updated annually
- Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
Additional Notes
- Candidate must not be local (must live 50+ miles away)
- No block scheduling accommodations
- On-call shifts required but frequency has decreased
- Must have or be in process of obtaining Illinois RN license
This position is ideal for experienced Operating Room Registered Nurses with strong trauma and general surgery backgrounds, comfortable with a variety of surgical specialties and emergency management protocols, and who are open to travel assignments in Illinois.
