Pediatric Acute RN Position - Peoria, Illinois
Unit Overview
- Department: Pediatric Acute (shares unit with Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)
- Total Beds: 22 beds for Pediatric Acute, 10 beds for Pediatric Hem/Onc; flexible bed usage depending on census
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
- Patient Types: Medical/surgical pediatric patients including hyperbilirubinemia, neurological conditions, diabetes, failure to thrive, cystic fibrosis, COVID-19, orthopedic cases
Certifications & Requirements
- Required Certifications: BLS (AHA), PALS (AHA)
- Active Illinois nursing license or proof of application initiation required
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Submission Requirements: Last 4 digits of SSN, middle initial, requested time off
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, takes patient assignments
- Pediatric Crisis RN: Available 24/7
- Administrative Supervisor: On site 24/7
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs): Ratio approximately 1:8-10
- Pediatrician Coverage: Hospitalist on site until midnight; 24/7 resident coverage
- Tele/Monitor Techs: Pediatric monitor tech monitors patients remotely; RNs do not read their own strips
Equipment & Responsibilities
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: Heated high flow and BiPAP with specific parameters; RNs troubleshoot only
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (07:00-19:30 or 19:00-07:30)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Day shift weekends: Sat/Sun; Night shift weekends: Fri/Sat)
- Holiday Requirement: Holidays required unless otherwise approved during interview
- Call/Standby: Not mandatory currently
- Floating: RNs may float within the children’s hospital to other pediatric units or mom/baby units (no ICU or chemo patients unless experienced)
- Orientation: 2 shifts minimum, can be extended with management approval; 12 non-billable orientation hours guaranteed
Dress Code
- Scrub Tops: Any pediatric-appropriate color or pattern; must not be revealing
- Undergarments: Solid color long sleeve or scrub jacket allowed underneath
- Scrub Pants: Solid color, must not be revealing
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Call off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or payback required
