Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)

Location: Chicago, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse - Operating Room (OR)
  • Shift: 4x10 hour shifts, 12:00 PM - 10:30 PM
  • Call Requirements: One 12-hour shift per month on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), either 7 AM - 7 PM or 7 PM - 7 AM. No weekday call.
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (2 weekends per month)
  • Return to Office (RTO): Maximum 5 days off with no more than 2 consecutive days. No time off allowed on holidays, the day before or after holidays, or on weekends.
  • Floating: Mandatory float facility; all staff must float within their scope as needed.
  • Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week

Experience & Skills Required

  • Minimum 2 years recent acute care experience in the Operating Room
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Strong scrub and circulate skills
  • Experience in Orthopedics, Orthopedic Trauma, Vascular, Urology, General Surgery

Preferred Experience:

  • Neurosurgery (cranial and spine)
  • Open Heart/Thoracic
  • Ophthalmology
  • ENT
  • Bariatric
  • Gynecology

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Location & Facility Highlights

  • Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue (provided)
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Parking available with shuttle service between parking and hospital

Candidate Requirements & Preferences

  • Locals accepted, locals preferred (must live within 75 miles of the facility)
  • Pending licenses are not accepted

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • Background check within 12 months covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years, including all aliases
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • International background check if applicable (lived/worked internationally in past 7 years)

Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) required for ER RN and some other units
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) required for L&D, NICU
  • Chemotherapy certification required for Oncology
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) required for L&D
  • NIH Stroke Certification required for RNs in certain specialties (e.g., ICU, ER, Neuro ICU) starting 10/14/2024
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required for starts on/after 4/14/2024
  • Color Blind Testing required for starts on/after 1/16/2024
  • Competency exams required for starts on/after 4/14/2024

Health Documents

  • Physical exam within 12 months, signed by PA, NP, DO, or MD
  • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) within 1 year, required annually
  • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or signed declination within 12 months
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months, updated annually
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer with boosters if low titer
  • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination within 1 year
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer with booster if low titer
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start, updated annually
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (10/01 - 04/01)
  • COVID-19 vaccine not required as of 8/21/2025

Facility Specific Documents

  • Various HIS forms and rules of behavior must be completed prior to start (specific to role)

Additional Notes

  • References: 2 references within 2 years preferred but not mandatory to start
  • Complete application and skills checklist required annually
