Registered Nurse - PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)

Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night Shift (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at a major hospital campus
  • Experience Required:
    • Minimum 18 months of permanent experience in the specialty prior to travel assignments
    • Minimum 18 months of recent pediatric experience (travel experience accepted)
    • Experience with epilepsy monitoring and specialized care for patients up to 25 years old
  • Licensing: Must have a permanent Ohio nursing license or a compact state license in hand
  • Certifications Required:
    • AHA BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Preferred: NIH Stroke certification
  • Skills: EKG rhythm recognition, inotropes administration
  • Holiday Work: Must work at least every other holiday
  • Orientation Testing: ECG rhythm recognition test and SafeMedicate medication test during orientation; passing scores required

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-Issued Photo ID: Must carry during assignment
  • Background Checks:
    • Comprehensive background check including FCRA compliant 7-year search
    • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
    • FBI and BCI fingerprinting within 48 hours of contract signing, updated annually
  • Education Verification: Required for all candidates
  • References: Two references from employment within one year, from a manager or supervisor
  • Employment Application: Must include 3 years prior work history with at least 2 years clinical practice in acute care and similar specialty
  • Skills Checklist: Required annually

Certifications & Competencies

  • Mandatory Certifications:
    • ACLS, BLS, PALS (must be current and renewed if expiring within 30 days of start)
  • Additional Certifications (Preferred or Required Depending on Role):
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) for L&D, OB/GYN, NICU
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) preferred for ER
    • Chemotherapy certification not required for oncology
  • Competency Exams:
    • Unit-specific competency exam required within 12 months of start and updated annually
    • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement: Required annually
  • Pass/Fail Testing: EKG and medication dosing tests during orientation for bedside RNs (except OR)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Within 1 year of start, including Snellen eye exam (for candidates signing 4/11/2025 or later)
  • Fit Mask: N95 fit test within 12 months, updated annually
  • Immunizations:
    • Tdap every 10 years
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella (boosters if titers negative/equivocal)
    • Hepatitis B titer, series, or declination
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (booster if negative/equivocal)
    • Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (10/31 - 03/31)
  • TB Testing: True 2-step PPD or QGold/TSPOT within 12 months, updated annually; chest X-ray if past positive
  • Drug Testing: Standard 10-panel drug screen within 12 months, updated annually (instant screens not accepted)
  • Eye Exam: Required within 1 year of start for new candidates signing 4/11/2025 or later

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Onboarding Modules: Must complete all online training modules prior to start; modules must be completed on a computer using Google Chrome
  • SafeMedicate Prep Materials: Provided for orientation medication test preparation
  • Fingerprinting: Must complete both BCI and FBI fingerprinting within 12 months and updated annually; facility will also conduct fingerprinting onsite
  • Holiday Work: Must work at least every other holiday

Additional Notes

  • Candidates with gaps in employment greater than 6 months may need to retake orientation modules and pass required tests again
  • Candidates must use their legal name in onboarding systems
  • Physical exam and immunizations accommodate latex allergies with prior notification

This position is ideal for experienced pediatric ICU nurses with strong pediatric and epilepsy monitoring skills, who hold current Ohio or compact state licenses and required certifications, and are comfortable working night shifts and holidays.
