Travel RN - Labor and Delivery
Location: Chattanooga, Tennessee
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Labor and Delivery Unit with:
- 9 labor rooms
- 6 triage rooms
- 3 antepartum (AP) rooms
- 3 operating rooms (ORs)
- Patient Ratios:
- Laboring: 1:1-2
- Antepartum: 1:2-3
- Cesarean section (C/S) and PACU: 1:1
- Staffing includes OB tech for C/S assistance, dedicated charge nurse for triage and transport, and unit secretary (7am-11pm)
- Documentation systems: Meditech and Centricity
- Scheduling: 3 shifts per week; working during winter holidays requires 1-2 shifts (days or evenings)
- Floating: Possible to float to Mother Baby unit occasionally; no other floating required
Required Qualifications
- Specialty: Labor and Delivery RN
- Experience: Minimum 2 years L&D experience (higher value confirmed)
- Prior Travel Experience: Preferred to have completed 1 or more travel contracts
- Certifications:
- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Skills and Procedures
- Advanced skills: NRP, ACLS, BLS, AWHONN intermediate fetal monitoring
- Procedures performed:
- Cervical exams
- Intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) and fetal scalp electrode (FSE) placement
- Vaginal deliveries
- IV starts with lab draws
- Circulating in cesarean sections
- Recovery care for cesarean sections (mostly spinal anesthesia, occasionally general anesthesia)
Unit Culture and Highlights
- Community hospital with 200+ monthly births and growing services
- Collaboration with a laborist program providing 24-hour MD and CNM coverage
- Dedicated anesthesia providers available 24/7
- First hospital in Chattanooga to offer nitrous oxide therapy for pain management alongside epidurals
- Recently renovated labor and delivery and mother-baby units, including six new state-of-the-art mother-baby rooms
- Use of advanced tools such as Jada, fetal pillow, and Cook's catheters
- Many nurses have completed Spinning Babies or Supporting Vaginal Birth classes to improve patient outcomes
Dress Code
- Solid color scrubs in black, grey, or pink only
- No patterns, sweatshirts, or t-shirts allowed
