Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Battle Creek, Michigan

Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• ICU position with a mix of PCU and ICU patients.
• Patient ratios vary by acuity:

  • ICU ventilated patients: 2:1
  • Cooling/CRRT/High acuity: 1:1
  • PCU and general med/transfer status: 3-4:1 depending on acuity
• Floating required to other ICU and Med Surg units as needed.
• Work schedule includes every other weekend.
• Must be available for the entire week of orientation.

Requirements

• Licenses/Certifications:

  • Michigan RN License (pending MI license acceptable with concrete ETA at submission)
  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS (AHA)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
• Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year ICU experience (1st time travelers accepted)
• Skills:

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmias, multi-system organ failure)
  • IV insulin protocols
  • GI surgery care
  • Management of chronic/acute renal failure, CVVHD/CRRT
  • Arterial line, central line, PICC line management, blood product administration
  • Continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, procedural sedation, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • CVA/acute stroke management
  • Respiratory care including BiPAP, CPAP, ventilator management, high flow nasal cannula, ABG interpretation, suctioning
• Patient Diagnoses: COPD, encephalopathy, drug overdose, DKA, AKI, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, heart failure, A-fib
• Special Procedures: CRRT, hemodialysis, arterial line placement, central venous catheter placement, tracheostomy placement, chest tube placement
• Equipment: Cooling machine, Bair Huggers, massive transfusions, CRRT

Orientation & Work Details

• Must attend full week of orientation.
• Floating to med-surg units in rotation with permanent staff; med-surg nurse-to-patient ratio approx. 5-6:1.
• ICU physician discretion may keep low acuity patients in ICU with adjusted nurse ratios.

Required Documentation & Compliance

• Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search back to age 18.
• Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
• Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start.
• Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma).
• Physical exam within 1 year of start.
• Drug testing: 10-panel including marijuana/THC within 45 days of start.
• Immunizations:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (must include pertussis)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 45 days of start
  • Rubeola (measles), mumps, rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required for candidates starting after November 1.
• Fit mask testing required onsite (Honeywell DC365N95HC).
• Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam and specialty competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment start.
• References: One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
• Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.

Additional Notes

• Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
• Patient acuity and nurse-to-patient ratios vary and require flexibility.
• Floating to other units is part of the role.
• Orientation attendance is mandatory.
