ER Travel Nurse Opportunity - South Charleston, West Virginia
Assignment Details
- Specialty: ER / P4 Trauma Center
- Location: South Charleston, West Virginia
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Facility Type: P4 Trauma Center (STEMI and stroke receiving)
- Unit: ER / P4 Trauma Center
- Beds: 28 total, with 2 designated Trauma/Code rooms
- Fast Track: Pit area used for fast track
- Triage Area: Separate triage area available
- Holding Area: Intermixed within the ED, managed by ER RNs
- Psych/Seclusion Rooms: 2 available
- Security: In-house 24/7, stationed outside ER
Patient & Staffing Information
- Average Patients per Day: 70-75
- Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:4
- Common Diagnoses: Sepsis, medical and surgical conditions, overdose, trauma (P4), COPD
- Patient Population: Infant, pediatrics, adolescent, adult, geriatric
- ED Physicians/Mid-Levels: Overlapping coverage by ED physicians and mid-level providers
- Charge Nurse: Takes assignment but without patients
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7
- Support Staff: ER techs handle EKG, transport, CPR, vital signs, and tech duties
- Respiratory Therapist: Available 24/7 by call, not dedicated in ER full-time
Required Certifications
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS
- PALS
- TNCC (required effective 10/21/2026)
Experience Requirements
- Specialty Experience: Critical care skill set required, including management of cardiac dysrhythmias, critical drips, BiPAP, CPAP, mechanical ventilation, and radial ABG draws
- Common Drips: Critical care drips, TPA, sedation, paralytics, etc.
- Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated, but critical care skills imply advanced ER experience (recommend at least 2 years)

Equipment & Procedures
- Respiratory equipment: Vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow oxygen

- X-ray and CT located just outside ER; ER techs or nurses transport patients
- Phlebotomy available 24/7; nurses assist with difficult sticks
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shifts:
- 6:45 am to 7:15 pm
- 10:45 am to 11:15 pm
- 3:00 pm to 3:00 am
- 6:45 pm to 7:15 am
- Block scheduling allowed; some shifts may alternate start times with advanced notice
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Rotational with core staff
- No call or standby requirement
- No floating required
Dress Code
- RN/LPN scrubs: Navy, solid color, no embroidery or patterns
- C.N.A./Monitor Tech scrubs: Dark grey/pewter, solid color
- Solid undershirts allowed in white, grey, or black matching scrub top
- WVU Medicine or solid color fleece zip-ups allowed in grey, black, navy, or royal blue
- Closed-toed shoes only; no crocs
Orientation
- First day: General hospital orientation
- Full day nursing orientation for RNs/LPNs
- Computer training: ½ day for C.N.A.s, full day for nurses
- Two 12-hour orientation shifts with preceptor
- Abbreviated Initial Skills Checklist due 90 days from start date
- Three 12-hour night shifts with potential for overtime during orientation
- Attempts made to block schedules; 6 on/8 off schedule not guaranteed
This position is ideal for ER nurses with strong critical care skills looking for a 13-week travel assignment in a busy P4 trauma center environment.
