Description
Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
Location: Bowie, MD
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: 5x8-Hour Alternating Day/Evening (07:30–16:00 / 15:30–00:00), Monday–Friday; flexibility required
Job Responsibilities:

Perform a full range of clinical laboratory testing across Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Immunology/Serology, and Urinalysis.

Conduct specimen collection, accessioning, processing, preparation, and accurate reporting of laboratory results.

Review and interpret quality control data; ensure adherence to quality assurance standards and regulatory compliance.

Operate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments such as Roche Cobas, Sysmex XM, ACL TOP, Siemens Dimensions, Hitachi, CellaVision, and other analyzers.

Perform blood bank procedures including ABO/Rh testing, antibody screening and identification, AHG crossmatching, transfusion reaction workups, Rhogam screening, electronic crossmatching, and antigen typing.

Execute microbiology tasks including culture plating, organism identification, Gram stains, sensitivities, PCR testing (flu, MRSA, Staph aureus, COVID, Group B), and rapid diagnostic testing.

Conduct advanced chemistry and special testing including osmolality, immunoassays, hormone/thyroid testing, cardiac enzymes, TDM, tumor markers, electrophoresis*, and chromatography*.

Perform hematology procedures including CBCs (manual and automated), manual differentials, coagulation studies, platelet counts, reticulocyte counts, sickle cell prep, and fetal hemoglobin testing.

Ensure proper specimen labeling, storage, transport, and disposal following safety and hazardous materials protocols.

Work independently and float within the laboratory as needed; maintain flexibility in shift assignments.

Provide accurate, timely results for patients across all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics.
Required Skills & Experience:
-
Minimum 2 years of clinical laboratory experience; strong candidates with solid hands-on generalist experience accepted.

Required experience in a community hospital setting; teaching hospital experience preferred.

Strong proficiency in chemistry, hematology, blood bank, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology.

Experience operating major analyzers and performing a wide variety of manual and automated lab procedures.

Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Previous charge/lead experience preferred.

Experience with Epic charting system preferred.
Required Certifications & Licensure:

ASCP certification (required)

ASCP-MLS (preferred)

BLS (preferred; AHA only)

Active Maryland or Compact laboratory license
