Description

Job Title: Specialty Pharmacist

Location: King of Prussia, PA 19406
Department: Home Care Pharmacy – Horizon
Assignment Duration: 13 Weeks (3 months initially)
Possibility of Extension / Conversion to FTE: Yes
Shift: Day Shift | 8-hour shifts between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM EST
Schedule: Monday–Friday | 40 hours/week

Job Summary

The Specialty Pharmacist serves as the primary pharmacy liaison between the specialty pharmacy, specialty clinics, and patients. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality specialty pharmacy services and maintaining competency in pediatric specialty drug therapies. The pharmacist supports clinical operations, medication access, and interdisciplinary collaboration while ensuring compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.

The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to provide age-appropriate care to pediatric patients and support leadership in directing clinical-related specialty pharmacy activities and services.

Key Responsibilities

Specialty Pharmacy Services

  • Provide accurate, timely, and compliant specialty pharmacy services for patients requiring specialty medications.

  • Deliver clinical monitoring and follow-up in accordance with organizational policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory guidelines.

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, healthcare professionals, and patients/caregivers to ensure safe, effective, and optimized pharmacotherapy.

  • Complete all patient documentation accurately and within required timeframes.

  • Apply working knowledge of URAC and Joint Commission Accreditation Standards and state pharmacy regulations.

  • Provide and receive timely communication to support interdisciplinary patient care.

  • Deliver drug information and education to clinic staff, patients, families, and specialty pharmacy personnel regarding disease states and specialty medications.

  • Refer patients to additional pharmacy services when appropriate.

Operational & Leadership Responsibilities

  • Manage patient enrollment and onboarding for specialty pharmacy services.

  • Initiate and manage prior authorizations for specialty prescriptions and support access to financial assistance programs.

  • Oversee specialty medication management within assigned clinical specialty areas.

  • Support daily clinic operations, including initial and follow-up patient visits or telephone consultations.

  • Serve as a drug information resource within specialty clinics.

  • Supervise pharmacy technicians and interns to ensure accurate preparation, dispensing, and timely delivery of medications.

  • Provide training and orientation to new specialty pharmacy staff.

  • Identify workflow inefficiencies and participate in process improvement initiatives.

  • Contribute to the expansion of specialty and ambulatory pharmacy services.

  • Precept pharmacy students, interns, and/or residents as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by Specialty Pharmacy Management.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Active Pharmacist license

  • Retail pharmacy experience required

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • 1–2 years of Specialty Pharmacy experience

  • Knowledge of pharmacy information systems, automated dispensing technologies, and computer applications

  • Demonstrated ability to provide care to neonate, pediatric, and adolescent populations

Education Requirements

Required:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree
