Registered Nurse – ER Holding

Facility: University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center
Location: Largo, MD
Start Date: 07/13/2026
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Night 3x12-Hour (19:30 - 08:00)
Schedule: 36 Hours/Week, Every Other Weekend Required
Charting System: Epic (Preferred)
Float Required: Yes – between ED Borders, Extenders to MS/Tele and IMC units within specialty and scope
Call Requirement: No
Note: This is an ER Border Unit. Fast-paced, high-volume environment caring for admitted ED patients awaiting inpatient placement. Auto Offer Position.

Position Overview:

The ER Holding Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric patients admitted through the Emergency Department and boarded in the ER Holding unit. The RN manages a diverse patient population with medical, surgical, telemetry, and intermediate care needs while coordinating care in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment.

Job duties:

  • Assess, monitor, and provide direct nursing care to adult and geriatric patients awaiting inpatient bed placement.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized plans of care for a wide variety of medical and surgical diagnoses.
  • Monitor cardiac rhythms and telemetry, recognizing and managing dysrhythmias and changes in patient condition.
  • Administer medications including cardiac drips, vasoactive drips, heparin infusions, insulin protocols, and blood products according to physician orders and facility protocols.
  • Initiate and maintain peripheral IVs, central lines, PICC lines, and other vascular access devices.
  • Provide care for patients with respiratory support needs, including oxygen therapy, BiPAP/CPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, ventilators, and tracheostomies.
  • Manage patients with neurological conditions including CVA, seizure disorders, traumatic brain injuries, and substance withdrawal.
  • Care for patients requiring telemetry, intermediate care, and medical-surgical level monitoring.
  • Respond appropriately to rapid response events, emergencies, and acute changes in patient status.
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social services, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care and safe transitions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, follow infection prevention protocols, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, and discharge expectations.

Requirements:

Licensure: Active Maryland RN License or Compact RN License

Experience: Minimum 2 Years of RN Experience Required; Travel Experience Required; Previous Charge Experience Preferred

Certifications:

  • ACLS
  • BLS
  • CPI
  • NIHSS (Preferred)

Other requirement:

  • Experience in ER Holding, MS/Tele, IMC, Stepdown, Telemetry, or similar acute care settings
  • Cardiac telemetry and dysrhythmia interpretation experience
  • Experience managing cardiac and vasoactive drips, including titration
  • Blood product administration experience
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, and vascular access management skills
  • Ability to care for high-volume, high-acuity patient populations
  • Comfortable floating within specialty and scope
  • First-time travelers accepted
