Registered Nurse – ER

Facility: University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus
Location: Baltimore, MD
Start Date: 07/20/2026
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Night 3x12-Hour (19:00 - 07:30)
Schedule: 36 Hours/Week, Every Other Weekend Required
Charting System: Epic
Float Required: Yes – within specialty as needed
Call Requirement: No

Position Overview:

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse provides comprehensive emergency nursing care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients presenting with a wide range of acute illnesses, injuries, behavioral health conditions, and traumatic emergencies. The RN is responsible for rapid assessment, triage, stabilization, treatment, and coordination of care in a fast-paced emergency department environment.

Job duties:

  • Perform rapid patient assessments, triage, and prioritization of care based on patient acuity and clinical presentation.
  • Provide emergency nursing care for medical, surgical, trauma, behavioral health, and psychiatric patients across all age groups.
  • Monitor, assess, and manage patients experiencing respiratory distress, cardiovascular emergencies, neurological events, and traumatic injuries.
  • Administer medications including emergency medications, IV vasopressors, continuous IV sedation, and procedural sedation according to established protocols.
  • Initiate and maintain peripheral IV access, perform phlebotomy, administer blood products, and manage central venous access devices.
  • Assist with advanced airway management, intubation procedures, ventilator care, BiPAP/CPAP therapy, and chest tube management.
  • Recognize and respond to stroke alerts, STEMI patients, traumatic injuries, behavioral health crises, and other emergency conditions.
  • Perform cardiac monitoring, obtain and interpret ECGs, recognize dysrhythmias, and initiate appropriate interventions.
  • Care for pediatric patients presenting with respiratory illnesses, seizures, infections, injuries, behavioral health concerns, and other emergency conditions.
  • Apply splints, assist with orthopedic trauma care, and provide wound and injury management.
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, radiology staff, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure timely patient care.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, follow infection prevention practices, and ensure compliance with patient safety standards.

Requirements:

Licensure: Active Maryland RN License or Compact RN License

Experience: Minimum 2 Years Emergency Department RN Experience Required

Certifications:

  • ACLS
  • BLS
  • CPI
  • NIHSS
  • PALS
  • TNCC (Preferred)

Other requirement:

  • Experience in a combined Adult/Pediatric Emergency Department
  • Ability to manage behavioral health and psychiatric emergencies
  • Experience with trauma and critical care patients
  • Proficiency in cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia management
  • Knowledge of emergency airway management and ventilator care
  • Comfortable floating within specialty as needed
  • Travel experience not required
  • First-time travelers accepted

Patient Ratios: 1:4 (up to 1:5 with lower acuity patients)
