Registered Nurse – ER
Facility: University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center
Location: Largo, MD
Start Date: 07/13/2026
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Night 3x12-Hour (19:30 - 08:00)
Schedule: 36 Hours/Week, Every Other Weekend Required
Charting System: Epic (Required)
Float Required: Yes – within specialty as needed
Call Requirement: No
Note: Auto Offer Position. Travel experience required; first-time travelers may be considered with 5 years of ER experience.
Position Overview:
The Emergency Room Registered Nurse provides comprehensive emergency nursing care to neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients presenting with acute illnesses, traumatic injuries, behavioral health emergencies, and life-threatening conditions. The RN is responsible for rapid assessment, triage, stabilization, treatment, and coordination of care in a high-volume Level II Trauma emergency department.
Job duties:
- Perform rapid patient assessments, triage, and prioritization of care based on patient acuity and presenting symptoms.
- Provide emergency nursing care for medical, surgical, trauma, psychiatric, and behavioral health patients across all age groups.
- Assess, stabilize, and monitor patients experiencing chest pain, stroke, sepsis, respiratory distress, respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, and traumatic injuries.
- Administer emergency medications, IV vasopressors, continuous IV sedation, paralytic agents, blood products, and procedural sedation according to physician orders and emergency protocols.
- Initiate and maintain peripheral IV access, perform phlebotomy, manage central lines, and support advanced vascular access procedures.
- Assist with airway management, intubation, ventilator care, BiPAP/CPAP therapy, chest tube management, and emergency resuscitation procedures.
- Monitor cardiac rhythms, obtain and interpret ECGs, recognize dysrhythmias, and initiate appropriate interventions.
- Provide care for trauma patients including gunshot wounds, orthopedic trauma, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and multisystem injuries.
- Assess and manage psychiatric emergencies including suicidal ideation, acute psychosis, violent behavior, psychiatric holds, and substance-related emergencies.
- Care for pediatric and neonatal patients presenting with respiratory illnesses, seizures, infections, trauma, behavioral health conditions, and other emergency diagnoses.
- Utilize specialized emergency equipment including Belmont Rapid Infuser, Lucas Device, and neonatal warming equipment during critical patient care situations.
- Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, radiology, rapid response teams, and interdisciplinary staff to deliver high-quality emergency care.
- Maintain accurate documentation, infection prevention practices, isolation precautions, and compliance with patient safety standards.
Requirements:
Licensure: Active Maryland RN License or Compact RN License
Experience: Minimum 3 Years Emergency Department Experience Required; 4–5 Years Preferred; Travel Experience Required; First-Time Travelers Considered with 5 Years ER Experience; Previous Charge Experience Preferred
Certifications:
- ACLS
- BLS
- CPI
- NIHSS
- PALS
- TNCC
Other requirement:
- Epic charting experience required
- Level II Trauma experience required
- Experience caring for patients across all age groups
- Strong triage and emergency assessment skills
- Experience with ventilated patients and advanced airway management
- Experience with trauma, stroke, sepsis, and cardiac emergencies
- Ability to manage psychiatric and behavioral health emergencies
- Comfortable floating within specialty as needed
